University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust is one of the largest acute hospital Trusts in England, serving the populations of Birmingham and Solihull. The Trust consists of four main hospital sites: Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEHB), Heartlands Hospital, Good Hope Hospital and Solihull Hospital (HGS).
The clinical biochemistry department provides a 24/7 diagnostic and monitoring service for routine and urgent automated investigations. It is equipped with Abbott Alinity c and i series analysers and the Abbott a3600 track.
Specialist Chemistry provides a wide range of services to the Trust as well as other Hospital Trusts. Equipment includes IDS iSYS, Shimadzu HPLC and Sciex Tandem Mass Spectrometry analysers, with several tests measured including immunosuppressants and steroids.
The Immunology department offers a wide range of tests that aid the diagnosis, treatment, and management of disorders of the immune system in patients.
As one of the pre‑specialist biomedical scientists, you will be trained and supported in the analysis, technical validation, interpretive decisions, and reporting of samples to achieve efficient and effective patient care.
The post holder will be required to undertake their responsibilities within any of the sections of the Department across UHB.

We are UKAS accredited to ISO 15189 2022 standards, MHRA approved and IBMS accredited for training.
This is an exciting opportunity to gain experience of working in a fast‑paced department that is continually growing, and to expand and develop your existing knowledge and skills.
The laboratory operates a 24/7 service, and after appropriate training, you will be expected to support the departmental shift system as required – including weekends. Shifts include Early (7:30‑3:30pm), Day (9:00‑5:00pm), Late (14:00‑22:00pm) and Night (21:45‑7:45am).
Qualifications and Requirements
* BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science or equivalent academic achievement ratified by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS)
* State registration with the Health Professions Council (HPC) and registration as a biomedical scientist
* Evidence of continuing professional development and proficiency in accordance with HPC guidelines
* Working towards completion of post registration specialist competency portfolio
* BSc in Biomedical Science or equivalent with HCPC registration as a biomedical scientist
Experience
* Experience of working in clinical laboratories
* Experience of laboratory techniques and automation
* Experience of dealing with suppliers, clinical and support staff, the public or customer care
Additional Criteria
* Numerate and able to undertake scientific calculations with or without the use of aide
* Ability to perform in a team
* Manual dexterity to undertake automated, manual, and specialised techniques
* Good and accurate IT input and MS Office skills
* Effective communication skills both written and oral
* Demonstrate logical thought processes and the ability to solve problems and plan remedial action

* Expected to participate in all out‑of‑hours periods as required by service provision
