Brief Description

You'll help keep our nation moving every single day.

A critical part of our work is the daily upkeep of the rail network. As a technician, you'll work outdoors in a team, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway running safely and smoothly for passengers and freight users.

Our technician community comes from diverse backgrounds, and this might be your first consideration of a career in rail. We're focused on your transferable skills and behaviors; if you can demonstrate them, we will provide all necessary training for you to work safely and competently on the network.

If you excel, you can look forward to a rewarding career with a company ranked in the top 50 of Glassdoor's 2021 Best Places to Work.

Note: There may be a requirement to work on call if you choose the standard maintenance contract.

About the role (External)

Our technicians serve as the vital link between team leaders and operatives. You will specialize in Track, responsible for maintaining, inspecting, and repairing the track network (also known as the Permanent Way or P-Way), ensuring safety and efficiency. This is manual work involving rails, sleepers, ballast, drainage, and structures.

Working outdoors in all conditions, you may transport equipment across challenging terrain. Safety, respect for rules, and teamwork are critical, especially working near moving trains at high speeds.

You matter to your team

As a natural team player, you can lead when asked, ensuring work is delivered safely, and competencies meet safety standards. You will role model safe behaviors and challenge risks to ensure everyone's safety.

You matter to us

Technicians can progress to become future team leaders. We support your self-development with training in technical and non-technical skills, providing confidence to transition into a rewarding rail career, even from other industries.

Your skills matter

While rail experience isn't necessary, demonstrate how your transferable skills meet these criteria:

* Leadership: Ability to lead, motivate, and direct teams safely and efficiently.
* Effective communication: Strong skills to give clear instructions.
* Technical skills: Knowledge of inspection, faulting, maintenance, and renewal techniques in your discipline.
* Safety: Role model safe behaviors, implement safe systems, and challenge unsafe situations.
* Problem-solving: Persistent in finding safe, effective solutions, and keeping skills updated.
* Willingness to learn: Committed to ongoing development.
* Qualifications: Ideally NVQ Level 1 or 2 related to the discipline, or equivalent experience.

Additional information

* Shifts: Includes days, nights, and weekends.
* Outdoor work: Comfortable working in all weather conditions.
* Pre-employment checks: Drug and alcohol testing, medical, BPSS, hearing, and eyesight exams.
* Driving license: Category B license required for Network Rail vehicles.
* Commute: Must live within 60 minutes of the location.
