This is an exciting time to join the Pathology team in Dorset. We are currently making great progress with our vision to create a first class integrated pathology service for Dorset.
The 'One Dorset Pathology' service encompasses site at Dorset County Hospital, Poole Hospital and The Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals which will provide clinicians, patients, and carers with a consistent and high standard of service across the area and maximise efficiency in the use of resources.
Staff will be able to develop to their full potential and substantial investment has been agreed, offering opportunities for service development and state-of-the-art modernisation.
We are looking for an enthusiastic Biomedical Scientist to join our friendly Blood Sciences and Transfusion team at Dorset County Hospital.
The successful applicant will be a state registered BMS though consideration will be given to applicants with an IBMS accredited degree in Biomedical Science, or an appropriate degree which could be topped up with extra modules.
The hospital is in the county town of Dorchester which is eight miles from the Jurassic coastline and award-winning beach.
The department has IBMS training approval, UKAS ISO15189:2022 accreditation and encourages professional development.
Main duties of the job
To assist in the organisation of and participate in the work of the Blood Sciences Laboratory & Hospital Blood Bank, in accordance with the departmental policies, protocols and quality standards.
The post holder will be expected to support the service working shifts including evenings, nights, weekends and bank holidays.

The department provides a wide range of investigations to Hospital clinicians, Community Services and General Practitioners.
We have supported staff to study for a wide range of qualifications including BBTS, MSc, and specialist portfolio.
The laboratories are approved for HCPC training and are accredited to ISO15189:2022.

Person specification
Eduacation, Qualifications & Training
* HCPC State registration in either Chemical pathology or Haematology and Blood Transfusion
* Evidence of involvement in ongoing training and development relevant to the post
Knowledge & Experience
* Experience working in Haematology/Transfusion or Chemical Pathology Laboratory environment
* Evidence of working independently or as part of a team
Skills & Abilities
* Evidence of knowledge of manual and automated techniques within at least one of the following; - Haematology and Coagulation - Blood Transfusion - Chemical Pathology
* Evidence of use and understanding of Internal and External Quality Assurance
* To achieve HCPC Registration within the first year in the department. (for trainee position)
* Evidence of working within Specimen reception/preparation areas
* Evidence of work planning and time management
* Evidence of communicating effectively
* Evidence of a flexible approach to working patterns and hours
* Evidence of working with Laboratory Computer systems
