Job Purpose

To lead and support the care team in delivering high-quality, person‑centred care to residents within the residential care home. The Senior Care Assistant is responsible for supervising care staff, ensuring care plans are followed, and maintaining safe, effective care standards at all times.


Key Responsibilities


Leadership & Supervision

* Provide day‑to‑day supervision and guidance to Care Assistants.
* Allocate duties and oversee shift responsibilities.
* Act as the senior member of staff on shift when required.
* Support induction and mentoring of new staff.
* Promote teamwork and maintain positive staff morale.


Resident Care

* Deliver and oversee personal care including washing, dressing, toileting, and mobility support.
* Ensure care is delivered in accordance with individual care plans.
* Promote dignity, independence, choice, and respect for all residents.
* Respond appropriately to residents’ changing needs.


Care Planning & Documentation

* Review, update, and maintain care plans and risk assessments.
* Complete daily records, incident reports, and handovers accurately.
* Monitor residents’ health and wellbeing and report concerns promptly.
* Liaise with healthcare professionals, relatives, and external agencies where appropriate.


Medication Management

* Administer, record, and supervise medication in line with policies and training.
* Ensure safe storage and handling of medication.
* Report medication errors or concerns immediately.


Safeguarding & Compliance

* Ensure safeguarding procedures are followed at all times.
* Maintain compliance with health & safety, infection control, and moving & handling regulations.
* Support inspections and audits where required.
* Act as a role model for best practice and professional standards.


Resident Wellbeing

* Encourage participation in activities and social engagement.
* Provide emotional support and reassurance to residents and families.
* Promote a homely, safe, and inclusive environment.


Skills & Experience


Essential

* Previous experience working in a residential or nursing care setting.
* Experience supporting or supervising staff.
* NVQ/QCF Level 3 in Health & Social Care (or working towards).
* Good leadership and communication skills.
* Ability to manage responsibility and make decisions during shifts.


Desirable

* Medication administration training.
* Dementia care experience.
* Knowledge of safeguarding and CQC standards.

Working Conditions

* Shift work including nights, weekends, and bank holidays.
* Responsibility as shift leader.

Other Duties

* Attend staff meetings and mandatory training.
* Support management with audits and quality monitoring.
* Undertake additional reasonable duties as requested by management.
