Post-doctoral Fellow in Renewable Fuel (UNSW)
The Opportunity
School of Photovoltaic and Renewable Energy Engineering (SPREE) offers a Postdoctoral Fellow to contribute to UNSW’s research in electrified low‑carbon fuel production.
* Location: Kensington – Sydney, Australia
* Salary: AUD $113,911 to $121,838 per annum + 17% superannuation
* Full Time: 35 hours a week
* Contract: 1‑year fixed‑term
* Reporting to: Dr Rob Patterson (no direct reports)
Responsibilities
• Conduct independent, high‑quality academic research on electrified low‑carbon fuel production. • Optimize and scale technology and processes in collaboration with industrial partners. • Prepare scientific reports, publications, and conference presentations. • Engage with multidisciplinary teams and build effective relationships.
Qualifications & Experience
A PhD in chemical engineering, applied electrochemistry, biochemistry or a closely related discipline, and/or relevant work experience.
* Proven commitment to staying up‑to‑date with discipline knowledge and developments.
* Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research with limited supervision.
* Track record of publications and conference presentations.
* Teamwork, collaboration across disciplines, and effective interpersonal skills.
* Excellent communication with stakeholders and students.
* Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities.
* Experience with electrochemical flow cells (e.g. fuel cells or hydrogen electrolysers).
* Experience with catalytic processes and electrocatalysis.
* Hands‑on electrochemical measurements (LSV, CV, chronoamperometry, etc.) using a potentiostat.
* Ability to identify and quantify organic fuel products (GC‑MS, NMR, FTIR, HPLC, etc.).
* Familiarity with other fuel property testing techniques (density, viscosity, vapor pressure).
* Experience with scalable fuel separation and purification techniques.
* Familiarity with commercialization processes and start‑up companies is an asset.
