Offer description

Brighton College is seeking to appoint a Director in Residence to start in September 2026.

The Department

A rare and exciting opportunity to join one of the most thriving drama departments in the country! Last year, the new performing arts building opened in the heart of the College, ensuring that drama is at the very core of our future here. This wonderful facility consists of a state‑of‑the‑art theatre, drama studio and rehearsal spaces. We are open to applicants who may wish to be considered for both the LAMDA Teacher and Director in Residence positions.

The new development has enhanced productions immeasurably, and the technical and design support for directors is unparalleled. As a recent reviewer from the National School Theatre Awards commented: ‘Brighton College has certainly set the bar sky high.’ With our key principles of participation and performance, we aim to inspire and encourage all pupils to involve themselves in plays and theatremaking. On stage or backstage, the opportunities are multitudinous.

The department produces an exciting array of productions each year: the Senior Production, Lower Sixth Production, Middle School Production, Year 9 Production, Year 8 Production, Year 7 Production. The department consists of three full‑time members of teaching staff, a Drama PGAT, Director in Residence, four LAMDA teachers.

There are also a plethora of drama activities on offer, such as improvisation clubs, a young writers club, scholars workshops, theatre design clubs, and drama outreach with local schools run by the senior pupils. We also run multiple theatre trips and digital theatre screenings. This cocurricular programme is augmented by events such as the Young Playwrights’ Showcase, House Film, and the House Duologue Competition.
