Overview
PRINCIPAL ELECTRONICS DESIGN ENGINEER - permanent role - WINFRITH near DORCHESTER. Hybrid working: 3 days on site, 2 days from home. This role leads the design and integration of bespoke electronics systems for complex maritime products, including high-bandwidth telemetry, low-signal data acquisition and power amplification for sonar and other electronics systems. It is a technical leadership position guiding a team of graduates, senior engineers and contractors, with collaboration across disciplines from concept to test and acceptance.
Immediate recruitment note: this position requires experience in a military/defence environment or the ability to obtain security clearance (SC level minimum).
Responsibilities
* Lead the design and development of digital and analogue electronics for above and underwater systems.
* Capture requirements, perform schematic and PCB layout (Altium/OrCAD), and conduct circuit simulations.
* Drive design reviews and collaborate with cross-functional teams.
* Devise and implement design verification tests and documentation for production readiness.
* System-level and sub-system integration and debugging.
* Mentor and coach junior engineers to build team capability; present robust engineering solutions at peer reviews.
* Utilize PCB development tools and processes and apply best practices for testability and manufacturability.
* Design for cost considerations and compliance with CE/UKCA directives, EMC and relevant standards.
* Familiarity with Matlab and Simulink.
* Lead and manage a team, including graduates, senior engineers and contractors.
Qualifications / Skills
* Expertise in high-speed digital design (LVDS, Ethernet), FPGA/SoC technologies with VHDL experience.
* Processor circuit design and software development (C/C++, RTOS).
* Power supply design (low-noise, compact, efficient) and power amplifier design (Class A/B, Class D; SiC or GaN FET devices).
* Circuit simulation and signal/power integrity analysis.
* Knowledge of CE/UKCA directives, EMC and relevant standards.
* Design for cost, testability and manufacturability; capability to drive production-ready documentation.
* Experience with Matlab/Simulink; ability to mentor and develop junior engineers.
* Experience with requirement capture, schematic capture, and PCB layout (Altium/OrCAD).
