This post is an important part of our ongoing development of medical services at East and North Hertfordshire NHS Teaching Trust, offering the successful applicant the opportunity to work closely with the existing Gastroenterology and Hepatology team to provide a high standard of care across the Trust. We are seeking a locum consultant with enthusiasm, commitment and drive to work closely with colleagues throughout the organisation and within the community to help lead the organisation.
This is a fixed term contract for 12 months from the 2nd March 2026 post based at the Lister Hospital in Stevenage and comprises 10 programmed activities (PAs) including an on-call commitment to the emergency endoscopy rota. The successful applicant will work closely with the existing 12 Gastroenterologists and 4 Hepatologists to provide a high standard Gastroenterology service to the Trust. This post is based at the Lister Hospital in Stevenage; however, clinics can be at any of three sites, Lister Hospital, the New QEII Hospital in Welwyn Garden City or Hertford County Hospital, Hertford.
Main duties of the job
It is expected that the applicant will complement an existing department offering gastroenterology and liver services, please see job plan. Across the Trust the care of GI and liver inpatients is centralised at the Lister site with consultants involved in a 1 in 12 GI bleeding rota which incorporates a 24/7 bleed service and some routine endoscopy at weekends whilst on-call. The post does not include a commitment to the general medical on call rota.

• Shared responsibility for the day-to-day management of the service and participation in strategic planning
• Teaching and training within the multidisciplinary service
• Active involvement in multidisciplinary team meetings and directorate clinical governance activity

Qualifications/Training
Essential criteria
* Hold a current licence to practice from the General Medical Council
* MRCP or qualification of an equivalent level
Desirable criteria
* Postgraduate degree (or equivalent)
Previous Experience
Essential criteria
* Broad range of experience in Gastroenterology • Diagnostic and Therapeutic Gastroscopy • Diagnostic and Therapeutic Colonoscopy
* Experience of supervising undergraduates, doctors in training and other colleagues
* Ability to offer and be accountable for full and independent expert diagnostic opinion
* Can evidence leading on patient safety issues and achieving a change in practice
Desirable criteria
* Demonstrable experience in a Locum Consultant role
