General Summary:
The Laboratory Coordinator within the Biology Department is responsible for the technical planning, oversight, and daily operation of the freshman biology teaching laboratories in the Integrated Science Complex (ISC). The incumbent supervises the setup and implementation of lab experiences associated with the courses, assists in designing, implementing, and evaluating new laboratory exercises, and trains staff and student assistants. The coordinator also provides technical support to the department and its operations in the ISC.
Examples of Duties:
* Supervise planning, logistics, and implementation of all lab exercises for the freshman biology labs, ensuring safety and efficiency.
* Supervise and support the biology lab technician, including troubleshooting, performance monitoring, and maintenance oversight.
* Oversee hiring, training, and work of student lab assistants, guiding their practices and mentoring their career development.
* Assist in developing and evaluating new laboratory exercises and updating lab manuals and protocols.
* Guide faculty, TAs, staff, and students in operating laboratory equipment and instruments.
* Ensure safety compliance with the Department of Environmental Health and Safety.
* Maintain accurate records of equipment, supplies, and inventories.
* Support faculty with course management software and prepare lab practical exams, including proctoring when needed.
* Manage the security, maintenance, calibration, and repair of lab equipment.
* Make recommendations for equipment purchases and replacements.
* Assist with the organization of departmental teaching and research facilities and support faculty with lab logistics.
* Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
* Bachelor's degree in biology or a related field.
* Experience with general biology lab techniques and coursework.
* Knowledge in areas such as science education, cell biology, genetics, ecology, or microbiology.
* Attention to detail, good record-keeping, and strong communication skills.
* Computer literacy, especially with Microsoft Excel.
* Ability to follow instructions, work collaboratively, supervise staff, and handle supplies up to 30 lbs.
