Role Overview
We are seeking experienced 4x General Sonographers to join our Insourcing Diagnostic Imaging Programme supporting Radiology services across Scotland.
This role offers the opportunity to deliver high-quality diagnostic ultrasound services within a fully managed NHS insourcing model, helping to reduce waiting times and improve patient access to care.
The service focuses exclusively on general ultrasound examinations - including abdominal, renal, small parts, neck, and lower-limb venous studies. No MSK or obstetric scanning is required.
Key Responsibilities
* Perform and independently report on a wide range of general ultrasound examinations in line with departmental protocols and national standards (BMUS / RCR).
* Manage own workload efficiently within insourcing sessions, ensuring accurate and timely reporting.
* Deliver consistent, high-quality imaging with strong attention to diagnostic accuracy and patient safety.
* Communicate effectively with referring clinicians, radiologists, and administrative staff to ensure continuity of care.
* Work collaboratively with in-house teams to maintain seamless integration into existing hospital workflows.
* Uphold all local and national governance, infection control, and data protection policies.
* Participate in quality assurance, audit, and peer-review processes as required.
Essential Requirements
* PgC / PgD in Medical Ultrasound or equivalent.
* HCPC or NMC registration.
* Minimum 3 years' post-qualification experience performing independent general ultrasound examinations.
* Competency in abdominal, renal, aorta, pelvic, small-parts, neck, and DVT / lower limb venous studies.
* Familiarity with NHS RIS / PACS systems and electronic reporting.
* Proven ability to work autonomously and produce high-quality diagnostic reports.
Desirable
* Prior experience working in NHS Scotland or equivalent UK hospital environments.
* Previous participation in insourcing or waiting-list initiatives.
* Experience supporting weekend or out-of-hours scanning sessions.
Programme Details
This role forms part of a fully managed NHS insourcing programme to provide extra clinical capacity and support backlog reduction in diagnostic imaging.
Work is delivered on-site within existing NHS facilities, following local governance frameworks.
Flexible sessional work is available, including weekday evenings and weekend clinics.
