Main duties of the job
We are seeking a trained and experienced phlebotomist to undertake phlebotomy clinics as part of our clinical team. You will need to be able to travel to any of our sites when required to undertake clinics. Clinics may be held in each of our four clinical sites in Bollington, Poynton and Disley, so being a car driver with access to your own vehicle is essential (mileage will be paid). You will work independently as part of the wider team, in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols with support from a GP on site during clinics, should this be required.

Key Responsibilities
Communication
* Communicate professionally and effectively with other team members.
* Communicate effectively with patients and carers, recognising their needs for alternative methods of communication.
Clinical
* Ensure room is tidy, clean and well stocked prior to and after clinic session.
* Ensure any PPE is worn correctly to protect self and patient.
* Record and report issues with clinical supplies pertaining to phlebotomy.
* Perform phlebotomy on patients as per the standard operating procedure or SOP for obtaining blood from patients.
* Take effective measures to reduce patient anxiety related to blood taking procedures and ensure patient feels safe and well-informed throughout.
* Cross check all relevant patient information, tests required and any special requirements for those tests.
* Ensure correct identity of patients and the labelling of their samples and instruct on corrective methods for patients to seek assistance if or when discrepancies occur.
* Be competent with computer system (ICE) and understand how to handle patient data; ensuring information is accurate and secure.
* Be able to summon assistance in the event of an adverse reaction or fainting episode during phlebotomy session.
* Complete relevant documentation of the intervention on EMIS.

* Able to use clinical judgement to ensure suitability of veins for venepuncture and acceptable quality of samples
* Able to take blood safely and competently without causing distress
* Able to employ suitable strategies for patients with needle phobia, procedural anxiety, or complex medical issues
* Good basic IT skills and knowledge of Patient Management Systems, particularly EMIS and ICE
* Identify, record and report key risks or hazards and contribute to Middlewood incident reporting system for identified learning events
Financial and Physical
* Able to safely deal with any blood spillages as per IPC policy
* Identify equipment/health and safety issues
