Job Overview The Department of General Surgery is looking to appoint a motivated consultant laparoscopic general surgeon with a specialist interest in Laparoscopic Upper GI surgery. The post is based at Glangwili General Hospital, Carmarthen, with t he emergency general surgery out of hours on-call taking place there. The on-call rota is a 1:8 frequency. Some elective sessions will take place on other hospital sites within the health board. The post is offered on the amended terms of the Consultant Contract Wales on an optional whole time 37.5 hour working week, 10 sessions. For the post we require experienced general surgeons who are able to manage the spectrum of surgical problems encountered in a rural district general hospital. The successful applicant will have wide experience in General Surgery with laparoscopic skills. We are looking for an experienced Upper Gastrointestinal surgeon with endoscopic skills. EUS and ERCP skills are desirable The successful candidate will be joining a dynamic and friendly team of surgeons, responsible for the provision of General Surgical services with specialty/special interests in breast, colorectal, upper Gastrointestinal and Endoscopy. Main duties of the job Provide, with consultant colleagues, a service for General Surgery, with the support of developing a sub-speciality interest to the hospitals and community so designated with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness. To provide and promote the delivery of quality, safe, effective and efficient care in general surgery and upper GI in line with the clinical pathways in place. Conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the health board’s service plans. Participate in the 1:8 emergency general surgery on-call rota at Glangwili General Hospital. Be an effective leader to all resident staff and trainees and a supportive educational supervisor to SAS level medical staff within the department, supporting the training programme, providing supportive and constructive feedback in the interest of learning. As a leader within the department, maintaining and promoting an inclusive and positive team culture. Our services are provided in: Four main hospitals: Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth; Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen; Prince Philip Hospital in Llanelli; and Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest Five community hospitals: Amman Valley and Llandovery hospitals in Carmarthenshire; Tregaron Hospital in Ceredigion; and Tenby and South Pembrokeshire hospitals in Pembrokeshire Two integrated care centres: Aberaeron and Cardigan in Ceredigion, and several other community settings 47 general practices (six of which are health board managed practices); dental practices (including four orthodontic); 97 community pharmacies; 43 general ophthalmic practices; and 8 ophthalmic domiciliary providers Numerous mental health and learning disabilities services Hywel Dda University Health Board operates a bilingual policy.
