Staff Nurse - CAMHs PICU - Oxford

Main area Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services – Inpatient PICU. Grade Band 5. Contract Permanent. Hours: 37.5 per week. Job ref 267-OC7164105-C.

Employer: Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust. Site: Meadow Unit, Town Oxford. Salary £31,049 – £37,796 per annum (pro‑rata). Closing 09/12/2025 23:59.

Are you seeking a nursing role within mental health?

We are looking for full‑time and part‑time Staff Nurses to join our CAMHS PICU. You will work with a multidisciplinary team to deliver high‑quality inpatient care and support for young people and their families.


Job Overview

As part of the nursing team you will build therapeutic relationships, provide clinical assessment, coordinate care plans, and develop your clinical and leadership skills. Training and supervision are provided to support individual and group therapeutic work.


Main Duties of the Job

* Engage proactively with young persons and their families/carers to build positive relationships.
* Make systematic assessments and re‑assessments using the CPA framework, considering history, strengths, mental state, physical, social and family needs, substance use, and legal aspects.
* Develop and review risk‑management plans, identifying opportunities for positive risk‑taking with patients and carers.
* Collaborate with the Care Coordinator to identify resources for the care package: housing, welfare, education and community services.
* Support family members and carers in their role; provide education on medication, monitoring (e.g., BP, glucose), and symptom management.
* Coordinate and implement care plans, communicate clearly in meetings, handovers and written reports.
* Facilitate therapeutic groups (DBT‑informed, psychodynamic, other units) and Positive Behaviour Support plans.
* Model healthy behaviours, promote patient choice and adherence, and support skill development for junior staff.
* Contribute to service improvement, research, and specialist interest development.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities

* Provide consistent and robust 24‑hour inpatient care.
* Engage with young persons and families/carers for positive relationships.
* Conduct comprehensive assessments within the CPA framework.
* Develop and review risk‑management plans.
* Co‑ordinate care resources with the Care Coordinator.
* Support family members and carers in their role.
* Demonstrate knowledge of medication effects, side‑effects and dosage.
* Competent in physical monitoring (e.g., BP, glucose).
* Promote patient choice and concordance.
* Coordinate plans of care, communicate clearly, and adapt to changes.
* Model healthy eating behaviors.
* Develop multidisciplinary relationships and co‑facilitate therapeutic groups.
* Create Positive Behaviour Support plans.


Person Specification


Experience

* Experience in mental health care or caring for young people (e.g., within CAMHS).
* Experience in a CAMHS inpatient unit / PICU setting.


Qualifications / Knowledge

* RMN/RNLD or RSCN registration.
* Knowledge of the MHA 1983.
* Further training in psychosocial interventions.
* Training in clinical risk assessment and management.


Skills

* Clinical risk assessment and management.
* Ability to handle patient concerns sensitively and effectively.
* Ability to duty on an inpatient ward.


Teaching and Facilitation

* Willingness to mentor students.
* Experience in mentorship.


Other Work‑Related Requirements

* Excellent fitness and completion of restraint training.
* Commitment to safeguarding and welfare of children, young people, and vulnerable adults.
* Thorough local and Trust‑wide induction.
* Satisfactory references covering three years of employment or study.
