Description
As a Storeman for Careys in West Cumbria, you will be responsible for the safe receipt, storage, control and issue of materials, tools and plant on a live construction site. You will ensure that goods are accurately logged, stored securely, and issued efficiently to support site productivity, while maintaining excellent housekeeping and high safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
* Receive, check and sign for deliveries against purchase orders/delivery notes.
* Inspect materials for damage, correct quantities, specification and quality.
* Coordinate unloading safely (including arranging unloading areas and banksman support where required).
* Report discrepancies, damages or shortages promptly to the relevant manager and procurement team.
* Maintain accurate stock records (manual and/or digital systems).
* Conduct regular stock checks and audits; report variances.
* Monitor usage rates and flag low stock levels to prevent delays.
* Ensure correct labelling, batch tracking and segregation of materials where required.
* Organise and maintain a tidy, secure stores area and/or compound.
* Store materials safely in line with COSHH, manual handling and fire safety guidance.
* Keep access routes clear and ensure good housekeeping standards at all times.
* Control access to stores and manage keys/security procedures.
* Issue materials, tools, consumables and small plant to operatives and subcontractors as required.
* Keep issue/return logs and ensure accountability for equipment.
* Coordinate returns, quarantine of defective items and replacement processes.
* Support basic control of small plant, accessories and inspection records.
* Assist with PPE stock and distribution (e.g., gloves, eye protection, dust masks, etc.).
* Ensure compliance with Careys procedures, site rules, and any client requirements.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
* Previous experience as a Storeman / Materials Controller / Yardman / Logistics Operative in construction or a similar environment.
* Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
* Ability to work independently and manage priorities in a busy site environment.
* Confident communication with site teams, suppliers and delivery drivers.
* Good housekeeping mindset and commitment to safe working practices.
* CSCS Card (relevant category for role/site requirements)
Desirable
Forklift (Counterbalance/Telehandler) ticket (CPCS/NPORS)
Slinger/Signaller or Traffic Marshal/Banksman (where site logistics requires)
Manual handling / COSHH awareness (often provided on induction)
Experience working on large civils, RC frame, infrastructure or complex construction projects.
Basic IT skills (email, spreadsheets, stock systems).
Knowledge of construction materials and safe storage requirements.
Familiarity with document control for delivery notes, PO matching, and audit trails.
