Job Overview

London is an iconic city. With Spatial Planning at the heart of major planning and investment decisions, we help ensure it remains so by shaping future development, integrating land use and transport, and supporting the Mayor’s Good Growth agenda. We develop policies through the London Plan, Opportunity Area Planning Frameworks and Local Plans, and deliver successful major developments by improving the transport system and environment.

What will I be doing?

You will work at the cutting edge of the relationship between development and transport. You will contribute to exciting and innovative proposals that can be of national significance, gaining a deep understanding of the planning process. Opportunities to become a Spatial Planning Assistant will arise in teams such as Development Management, London Plan & Planning Obligations, and Growth and Master Planning.

Sustainability

Sustainability is central to TfL’s ethos; you will support and implement sustainable development through the Mayor’s Good Growth agenda on projects.

Where can this career take me?

Students completing this programme often secure roles as planning consultants in both public and private sectors, and a Year in Industry placement prepares you for built‑environment careers in:

* Development management
* Property development
* Transport planning
* Policy making
* Regeneration
* Master planning
* Sustainability
* Local Government / Civil Service

Training and Support

Your professional development will be supported through a combination of on‑the‑job experience, an established training programme, mentoring, and networking opportunities.

* Placement manager: Day‑to‑day support and development
* Scheme sponsor: Senior manager providing technical and professional advice and line‑management responsibility
* Buddy: Apprentice or graduate offering support and welcoming you into the organisation
* Development adviser: Career coaching and progression support

What do we look for?

We value candidates who:

* Care about colleagues, customers, and the quality of work
* Embrace new ideas and collaborative working
* Adapt to diverse needs and drive innovation

Application Process

The process consists of five steps, beginning with an online assessment that must be completed within the allocated time frame. Following successful assessment, an interview centre will take place between December and January. You will receive guidance and deadlines through email.
