Overview
The Environment Agency is seeking a Manager to lead the Economic Crime Unit (ECU), part of the National Environmental Crime Unit (NECU). The ECU aims to remove the financial benefit from criminals. The role is hybrid, with occasional travel, and supports the organisation in understanding and applying the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA).
Responsibilities
* Provide strategic leadership for the ECU and manage two Team Leaders (Asset Denial Team and Money Laundering Investigations Team) and a Senior Financial Intelligence Officer.
* Lead and develop a dispersed team, ensuring high performance and delivery of financial investigations in line with POCA obligations.
* Collaborate with internal teams (Investigatory Teams, Intelligence & Partnerships, Legal) and external partners (Police, National Crime Agency, HMRC).
* Influence senior stakeholders to ensure EA priorities are supported and recognised by external enforcement agencies.
* Support the wider organisation by sharing lessons learned, contributing to technical documentation, and advising other enforcement officers nationwide.
* Contribute to continual improvement of working practices and understanding of POCA; provide guidance and capability development for the team and individuals.
* Travel across the country for meetings and operational duties; incident response may be required and could attract additional pay.
* Participate in interview and assessment processes as part of application and onboarding.
The Team
The ECU comprises two teams—Asset Denial and Money Laundering Investigations—consisting of Financial Investigators, Financial Intelligence Officers, and Crime Analysts. The unit operates nationally with enforcement staff and partners, tackling serious and complex criminality involving organised crime networks.
Experience / Skills Required
* Exceptional leadership skills, ideally with experience leading a dispersed team.
* Good understanding of financial investigations and the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA).
* Experience in law enforcement and understanding of the National Intelligence Model.
* Effective communication, including delivering feedback, managing performance, and building relationships with external stakeholders.
* Ability to work under pressure and prioritise a varied workload.
* Ability to identify areas for improvement and lead changes to working practices.
* Experience developing and enhancing the capability of a team and the individuals within it.
Other Information
* This is a hybrid role; you’ll work from home and your nearest office with some travel required.
