The post holder will be a member of the general Portering team and will provide a full portering service to all wards and departments as instructed by the Portering Services Manager, Head Porter, or duty Charge hand Porter. Core duties will involve the transportation of patients, records, equipment, specimens, and supplies, along with other tasks as detailed in this job description.
The Porter will be based primarily in the Accident & Emergency department.
1. Collection and transportation of pathology specimens.
2. Collection of medical gases from store, transport to ward and department, and assemble where necessary.
3. Change medical gas cylinders in manifold rooms.
4. Deal with all general inquiries from staff, patients, visitors, and members of the public in a helpful and courteous manner.
5. Transport patients from and between wards, departments, and from Accident & Emergency.
6. Remove deceased patients to the mortuary, assisting with viewings as directed.
7. Carry out duties at departmental level as directed, such as in A&E, X-Ray, OPD, Pharmacy, including carrying the appropriate bleep and mobile handsets.
8. Portering of general items such as furniture removals.
9. Collect and record blood products from the Blood Bank to wards and departments.
10. Assist in the event of a fire or major security alert according to Trust policies.
11. Carry out planned and ad-hoc security duties, including checking identities and reporting incidents.
