Senior FPGA Firmware Engineer
The Cross-Domain (XD) team delivers high-performance appliances for the Defensive Cyber market. We develop from scratch with security as a primary consideration, designing the entire appliance, including high-performance C++, embedded software, FPGA firmware (VHDL), custom PCBs, power distribution, and thermal management. All components must provide reliable, supportable, and maintainable solutions for our customers.
Job Role
A Senior Firmware Engineer in the XD team participates in the full product lifecycle, from concept and design to delivery and support. We primarily use Altera FPGAs, with code developed in VHDL. This is a hands-on role requiring solid VHDL experience and familiarity with at least one modern FPGA tool chain (preferably Intel, Xilinx, Achronix, or similar). Experience with embedded blocks within these FPGAs and their integration is highly valuable.
As a senior engineer, you will lead small teams of junior engineers, providing support and mentorship.
The team comprises about 50 engineers based mainly in Gloucester, within a wider group of approximately 200 engineers. We are part of the larger BAE Systems Digital Intelligence capability in the UK, employing around 3,500 staff. We offer technical challenges, a collaborative environment, and opportunities for career development across various activities including product development, research, consultancy, and customer engagement.
Candidates must hold or be eligible for UK security clearance and meet nationality requirements. Remote work is not regular but we offer flexible working arrangements respecting personal needs.
