Job overview

We are recruiting for two Assistant Medical Secretaries to join our Secretarial Team for 37.5 hours per week within the Respiratory department, based at York Teaching Hospital. You will provide support to the Medical Secretaries and their Consultant Teams.

Excellent administration/secretarial skills and audio-typing experience/qualifications are required, as well as a good understanding of customer relations. You will be required to deal with queries from patients, Consultants and GPs.

Main duties of the job

You will be responsible for typing clinical and administrative letters, answering telephone enquiries and dealing with patient queries, as well as covering the Medical Secretaries during periods of absence.

The successful candidates will be required to have good organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise the demands of a busy office and manage their time and workload effectively.

They will also be required to work unsupervised and communicate with Consultant Surgeons and wider team members on a regular basis.

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria

9. Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook)
10. Thorough knowledge of complex medical terminology
11. Previous Secretarial/Administrative experience (6 months minimum)

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria

12. Educated to GCSE Level or equivalent. English at C or above – or equivalent qualification/demonstrable experience
13. Word Processing and Computer literacy skills to RSA3/NVQ3 Level

Desirable criteria

14. AMSPAR or equivelant typing experience
15. ECDL or equivelant typing experience
16. Previous Office/Administrative experience in an NHS environment
