Overview

This role is an exciting opportunity for an experienced electrical engineer with knowledge of high, medium, low and extra-low voltage electrical systems and equipment to join the Environment Agency’s Standards and Engineering team as a Senior Electrical Engineer. Expertise relating to control systems design and SCADA / telemetry systems would be beneficial.

Working within our Standards, Asset Management and Engineering Directorate you will influence and shape how we deliver our service into the future. As part of our Technical Authority, you will provide technical engineering leadership and support to the whole organisation to meet our objectives of safe, reliable and sustainable assets and meet our commitments to net zero carbon. You will be part of a team that manages, develops and maintains our electrical engineering standards, including our electrical safety rules, for our electrical systems and equipment, which includes HV and LV power systems and control systems within assets such as pumping stations, water management and flood defence structures and monitoring sites.

You will help develop, deliver and maintain competency and skills guidance for all employees managing or carrying out work on our electrical systems and equipment. You will also be required to hold a national incident response role which may be within normal working hours or out of hours.

Responsibilities

You will join the MEICA Engineering Standards team in Standards and Engineering, part of the Standards, Asset Management and Engineering department, within the Flood and Coastal Risk Management Directorate. The team provides technical standards, management and leadership across mechanical, electrical and control system activities. You will help manage and maintain electrical engineering standards and safety rules for electrical systems and equipment across assets such as pumping stations, water management and flood defence structures.

Key responsibilities include:

* Develop, deliver and maintain competency and guidance for employees managing or working on electrical systems and equipment.
* Provide technical leadership and support as part of the Technical Authority to meet safety, reliability and sustainability objectives.
* Contribute to development, delivery and maintenance of electrical engineering standards, including electrical safety rules for HV/LV systems and control systems.
* Participate in a national incident response role, which may occur outside normal hours.


Experience/Skills Required

Through experience to date, you should be able to demonstrate most of the following:

* Good working knowledge of the Electricity at Work regulations and BS 7671 IET wiring regulations.
* Good working knowledge of control systems, including IEC 61508, IEC 62061 and BS EN 13489, and telemetry/SCADA systems.
* Knowledge of high and low voltage generation and distribution systems.
* Experience in developing and delivering Safe systems of work, risk assessments and method statements.
* Testing and isolation of high and low voltage electrical systems and proving dead.
* Strong understanding of a risk-based approach to electrical maintenance philosophies, including FMEA, reliability systems and processes.
* Drafting and publishing electrical policy, instructions and guidance.
* Excellent work management, teamwork and communication skills.


Other Requirements

UK Driving licence; current membership of a recognised engineering institution and registration as a Chartered Engineer with the UK Engineering Council, or active progress toward registration with a realistic prospect of registration within 12 months.

Additional Information

This is a hybrid role with a base location near your home. Some travel and in overnight stays may be required. Interviews will be held via MS Teams within three weeks of the closing date. If you are on a reserve list, your details may be kept for up to six months for potential future posts.
