Overview

The University of Derby invites applications for a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Nuclear Engineering with a focus on neutronics for teaching. The role involves delivering high-quality teaching, pursuing innovative research, and contributing to the growth of our nuclear engineering programmes, including higher degree apprenticeships. You will engage with employers to ensure alignment of teaching with sector expectations and may collaborate with Rolls-Royce and the supply chain to enhance research capabilities.


About the College/Department

The College of Science and Engineering at the University of Derby hosts STEM disciplines and works to shape the future through research, industry engagement, and education. The discipline area is located at the STEM annex in Markeaton Street, with facilities including intelligent instrumentation, smart sensor technologies, robotics, renewable energy, power engineering, and advanced materials. There is an active applied research agenda and knowledge exchange projects.


About the Role

We are seeking an enthusiastic and knowledgeable individual to join our team as a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Nuclear Engineering, with a particular focus on neutronics for teaching. The role includes developing and delivering flexible, high-quality teaching materials, engaging in research that informs practice, and supporting the University’s REF strategy. Responsibilities include contributing to nuclear engineering programmes and apprenticeships, working with employers, and engaging with Rolls-Royce and the supply chain where appropriate. Most teaching is at Markeaton Street campus with potential teaching at other locations; research labs and facilities are on the same site.

Anticipated interview date: Friday 7th November

Note: This role is employed by the University of Derby but works in partnership with Rolls-Royce Submarines Ltd. Some NSA roles may require Security Check (SC) clearance in the future; this role does not currently require SC clearance and it is not a condition of appointment. A future SC check may be required should circumstances change due to NSA development. The University cannot sponsor international workers under the Skilled Worker route for this role.


About You

The ideal candidate will hold a PhD (or near completion) in a relevant subject, or equivalent professional achievement, with a commitment to ongoing development. You will have expertise in nuclear engineering or related disciplines, with a focus on neutronics, and can contribute to teaching and research in areas such as the nuclear life cycle, power generation systems, reactor safety, and emerging nuclear technologies. Experience in higher education and ability to use a variety of delivery methods with excellent communication skills to engage and inspire students is essential. A strong research or practice-based record contributing to the REF and aligned to the University’s research strategy is expected.
