Role Overview
The Estimating Assistant will support the Senior Estimator and Commercial Manager/Quantity Surveyor in the preparation, coordination, and submission of competitive and accurate tenders for structural steel and architectural metalwork projects. The role is key in ensuring that all cost elements are captured, analysed, and presented in line with project requirements, company standards, and commercial objectives.
Key Responsibilities
* Assist in the preparation of detailed cost estimates for structural steelwork and architectural metalwork packages
* Review tender documentation including drawings, specifications, and employer’s requirements
* Perform quantity take-offs and assist in preparing material and labour costings
* Obtain and analyse supplier and subcontractor quotations
* Support in the preparation of tender submissions, ensuring accuracy and completeness
* Liaise with internal departments including design, procurement, and workshop teams to ensure accurate pricing inputs
* Maintain and update cost databases, supplier records, and historical project data
* Assist in identifying risks, value engineering opportunities, and cost‑saving measures
* Support post‑tender negotiations and clarifications as required
* Ensure all estimating activities are carried out in line with company procedures and relevant industry standards
Skills & Experience
* Previous experience in an estimating or commercial support role within construction, steelwork, or a related industry (desirable)
* Basic understanding of construction drawings and specifications
* Strong numerical and analytical skills with high attention to detail
* Proficient in Microsoft Excel and general IT systems (experience with ERP systems such as Odoo advantageous)
* Excellent organisational and time management skills
* Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
