We are seeking an outstanding and self-motivated HCPC-registered Consultant Clinical Scientist with expertise in cancer genomics, molecular pathology, or cytogenetics to lead our Cytogenetics and Molecular Haematology Department.
This is a senior leadership role, offering the opportunity to shape and deliver a cutting-edge cancer genomics service across East and South East London, while contributing to the development of the national genomics agenda.
About Us
The Cytogenetics and Molecular Haematology Department provides a comprehensive cancer genomics service for East London and Essex, working in partnership with the North Thames GLH. Our portfolio includes:
• Next-generation sequencing (NGS)
• PCR-based mutation analysis
• Post-transplant monitoring
• Measurable residual disease (MRD) testing
The department has an active research and development programme in collaboration with the Barts Cancer Institute (BCI), including projects in long-read sequencing and novel biomarker discovery.
The service is integrated into the East & South East London NHS Pathology Partnership, a collaboration between Barts Health (host), Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. Our hub laboratory is at The Royal London Hospital, supported by Essential Service Laboratories across partner sites.

Main duties of the job
• Provide scientific, clinical, and operational leadership for the Cytogenetics and Molecular Haematology service.
• Analyse, authorise, and report on complex genomic results, including molecular testing, cytogenetics, and whole genome sequencing (WGS).
• Drive research and development, including implementation of innovative technologies and shaping the strategic vision for cancer genomics within the service.
• Contribute to training, education, and mentoring of the scientific workforce within the organisation and across the North Thames Genomic Laboratory Hub (GLH).
• Act as a key member of the Specialist Integrated Haematological Malignancy Diagnostic Service (SIHMDS), collaborating with clinical, academic, and scientific colleagues regionally and nationally.
Working for our organisation
The NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership is an arms-length organisation providing pathology services to Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The Pathology Partnership is hosted by Barts Health. The Pathology Partnership was formed in May 2021. Between 2021 and 2024 the Partnership undertook a complex transformation programme to establish a single network of laboratories, underpinned by a single Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and single Quality Management System (QMS). The Partnership has a main hub laboratory at the Royal London Hospital and Essential Service Laboratories (ESL) as a minimum at the six other hospital sites served by the Partnership. The Partnership has three operational divisions:
· Blood Sciences including Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry
· Microbiology and Virology
· Cellular Pathology and Cancer Diagnostics The 2024/25 total operating costs across the Partnership were c. £121m per annum with a workforce establishment of circa. 860 WTE.
