Mental Health Care Assistant – Bank (Band 3)
Role Summary
24/7 service requiring flexible working to support clinical areas. The role includes therapeutic engagement with patients, leading to safe, compassionate care. Work as part of a multidisciplinary team, delivering nursing care to patients with mental health problems in an inpatient setting.
Responsibilities
* Support/advise clinical staff in the safe management of patients with mental health difficulties.
* Conduct patient assessment, care planning, implementation and evaluation.
* Deliver therapeutic interventions to reduce agitation and promote recovery.
* Maintain a safe and compassionate environment, upholding the NMC Code of Conduct.
* Provide high standard of individualized care involving relatives/carers when appropriate.
* Assist with fluid and dietary needs, recording intake and output.
* Collect specimens and record routine observations (weight, BP, temperature, pulse, respiratory rate).
* Respond to clinical emergencies and perform physical interventions (restraint) only as last resort.
* Assist the RN with safe handling and mobilisation of patients.
* Maintain communication with patients, carers, family and support the team with care plans.
* Ensure adherence to Trust policies (Health & Safety, Fire Safety, Waste Management, Resuscitation).
* Provide general care duties and maintain own skill development.
* Chaperone patients to other departments following assessment by the RN.
* Support admissions, discharge and handover of patients.
* Demonstrate leadership qualities, openness, transparency and trustworthiness.
* Act as patient advocate and promote a patient‑oriented approach aligned with the NHS Plan.
Essential Qualifications
* GCSE level or equivalent (minimum 5 A–E grades, including Maths and English).
* NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care or equivalent experience.
* Care Certificate.
* Minimum 12 months care experience, preferably within an NHS hospital.
Essential Knowledge & Experience
* Experience as a Healthcare Support Worker in an NHS hospital setting.
* Knowledge of NICE guidelines for managing disturbed behaviour.
* Experience with restraint training and safe handling of patients.
Desirable
* Ability to provide quality care without close supervision and take initiative.
* Empathy for individuals with mental health problems and ability to cope with challenging behaviour.
* Exceptional interpersonal communication skills with patients, carers and relatives.

* Pay: £24,795 to £25,275 per annum (pro‑rata).
* Contract: Bank.
* Working pattern: Part‑time, Flexible.
