Community Midwife Team Leader

The closing date is 30 October 2025

The post holder is required to provide holistic midwifery care to women and babies in the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal periods. Midwifery care is provided both in hospital, birth centre and community settings, including the management of individual caseloads, clients and/or ward areas. The post holder will deputise for the Band 8 in the clinical area when required and will be responsible for a team of midwives, working across community and acute settings.


Main duties of the job

1. To act as an advocate for the women and babies receiving maternity care.

2. Listen and respond appropriately to consumer feedback in conjunction with Patient Advocacy Services (PALS).

3. Demonstrate appropriate behaviour/attitude (helpful, kind, caring, compassionate and respectful) when dealing with service users and colleagues, acting as a professional role model for other staff in accordance with the NMC Code (2015).

4. The practitioner is expected to ensure that their own clinical practice and that of other staff, within the team and the area of practice is of a high quality and safe standard in compliance with statutory rules and standards including NMC and CQC standards, local policies and guidelines and with consideration to the physical, psychological, social, cultural and religious needs of clients.

5. Recognise complications and deviations from the norm in midwifery and refer appropriately to obstetric colleagues.

6. Collaborate with and assist obstetric colleagues in the care of women with complicated pregnancies, maintaining effective communication with obstetricians and other disciplines involved in maternity care.

7. To deal with distressed clients and relatives with care, compassion and competence.

8. To regularly use IT technology including the use of electronic maternity data collection systems to input data relating to maternity care.

Job responsibilities

The practitioner has a responsibility for their own professional updating and will ensure a proactive approach to continued professional development to meet the needs of modern midwifery service.

To assess, plan and support own development and education training needs within the midwifery team, in consultation with Band 7 midwives, Practice development midwives and the Midwifery Managers.

To participate in department based training that is dynamic and meets the needs of the specific area in order to maintain a high standard of care.

To undertake annual and other mandatory training updates and relevant courses in line with Trust and local policies when requested by Managers.

Act as a mentor and/or assessor for midwifery learners and other related disciplines.

Act as preceptor to newly qualified midwives.

Be up to date with current evidence and developments within midwifery and be able to apply them to practice.

As a team leader act as a role model for Band 6 midwives and effectively address and manage any human resource issue within the team.

Maintain a professional portfolio using NMC and PREPP guidelines to demonstrate personal clinical expertise.

To participate in the Trusts Appraisal and to perform appraisals for individual team members.

Effectively manage sickness and absence in accordance with Trust policies and procedures. This includes communicating with staff regarding absence, recording absence, conducting return to work interviews in a timely manner, producing investigation packs and conducting meetings in line with policy.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* Current NMC registration
* Registered Midwife
* To have obtained or be studying to degree level (or diploma with equivalent experience)
* Maintained an up‑to‑date professional portfolio and revalidation requirements
* Training in management of obstetric emergencies
* Educated to degree level or working towards it


Experience

* Recent experience in all aspects of midwifery practice
* Recent experience in working in a busy NHS Maternity Hospital Setting
* Competencies relevant to sphere of practice
* Experience with multidisciplinary working
* Experience with safeguarding
* Evidence of further study and development of professional and academic skills
* Recent experience within a community setting
* Experience of mentoring students
* Recognised management study
* Recognised leadership study
* Willing to lead an innovation project
