Job overview

An excellent opportunity has arisen within our Neurosurgery Department, for a Senior Clinical Fellow based at the Royal Preston Hospital, to commence following completion of pre- employment checks. Ideally suited to fully registered doctors seeking to extend their existing exposure in the speciality, there may be a requirement to participate in the on-call rota working alongside middle grade colleagues. In this role you will be working within a supportive and educationally focused environment, although this post is not recognised for training purposes, considerable “hands on” training is given in line with skills and experience. This is a full-time post for 12 months. Previous experience in Plastic Surgery is essential

Main duties of the job

The unit treats the full range of general adult and paediatric plastic surgery conditions including patients with major and minor burns. Microsurgical procedures are performed on elective and emergency patients. Day case surgery under both local and general anaesthetic is carried out

Weekly teaching meetings – with Consultant input - are held. Morbidity and mortality audit is performed monthly, and quarterly clinical governance meetings are held.

The Department is staffed by 12 Consultants; there are 12 Middle Grades which include 4 Training posts (ST4-8) and 6 non-training Trust appointments, one Research Fellow and one Spinal Fellow. They rotate between each Consultant/team every six months. There are 3 ST1-3 and 5 Clinical Fellows who take part in the 1:8 rota. The role is also supported by Nurse Practitioners.

Working for our organisation

Undergraduate medical student teaching has commenced in 2003. The Plastic Surgery Directorate has active links with the University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN) with trainees undertaking laboratory research at the University. Considerable opportunities exist for research and development, which are integral to teaching hospital status.

This post is subject to the National Terms and Conditions of service for Hospital medical and dental staff (England and wales) Sept 2002 and remuneration will be as set out in the NHS Medical and Dental Pay Circular.

Although this post is not recognised for training purposes, considerable “hands on” training is given in line with skills and experience.

We support the requirements for Continuing Medical Education as laid down by the Royal Colleges and are committed to providing time and financial support for these activities.

You will receive the full support of the Trust and the Directorate to develop specialist areas of interest in line with Directorate business plans and the development of services generally within the Trust.

Clinical research is actively encouraged.

Support to study leave and medical meetings can be arranged

Qualifications

4. Full GMC Registration and License to Practice
5. MRCS or equivalent

Desirable criteria

6. ST3/4/5 or equivalent

Experience and Skills

7. Basic Surgery training or equivalent
8. Experience of working independently whilst operating on local anaesthetic patients.
9. Able to operate on all trauma and flexi-tendon cases
10. Experience in Plastic Surgery

Desirable criteria

11. Previous experience in research
12. Involvement in audit

13. Effective communication skills (with examples on how they were successful).
14. Good organisation skills with examples
15. Works well within a multidisciplinary environment.
