Part time Consultant Opportunity - Later Life Mental Health

We are delighted to offer an exciting part‑time position to join a highly experienced colleague in delivering inpatient care across two Later Life Mental Health wards at the Long Fox Unit, located on the Weston General Hospital site.

You will become a member of a well‑established and collaborative group of North Somerset Consultants who meet regularly for peer support and supervision. The team is known for its collegiality and commitment to high‑quality care.

Responsibilities

* Share RC responsibility for all patients on both wards (10 beds each), each having direct responsibility for 5 patients and covering for the other during absences.
* Oversee assessment, treatment, and discharge planning for older adults with functional mental disorders and organic brain disease.
* Supervise medical staff in providing medical and mental‑health interventions, liaising with community teams and other hospitals.
* Apply the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act, preparing requisite reports and undertaking RC and AC roles.
* Participate in the academic programme, supervision and mentoring of resident doctors, annual appraisal, and job planning.
* Contribute to medical leadership in agreement with the local Medical Lead.


Person Specification – Qualifications

* Essential: MB BS or equivalent medical qualification.
* Desirable: Relevant higher degree (MD, PhD, MSc) or additional clinical qualifications; MRCPsych or equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.


Eligibility

* Essential: Fully registered with the GMC, licence to practice at appointment; on GMC Specialist Register or within six months of gaining CCT; approved clinician status or able to achieve within three months; approved under S12 or able to achieve within three months.
* Desirable: CCT in Older Adult Psychiatry.


Experience

* Essential: Experience assessing and treating patients in an inpatient setting; evidence of CPD participation; evidence of effective multidisciplinary team involvement.
* Desirable: Knowledge of alternatives to inpatient admission care approaches.


Personal Skills

* Essential: Leadership and teamwork in a multidisciplinary setting; time‑management, workload prioritisation and appraisal of own performance; excellent oral and written communication with patients, carers and staff.
* Desirable: Evidence of specific achievements demonstrating leadership skills.


Clinical Skills

* Essential: Ability to assess and treat psychiatric problems in adults of working age and to manage crisis situations.


Knowledge

* Essential: Understanding of management skills required of a Consultant; awareness of current issues in mental‑health service provision, policy and legislation.
* Desirable: Knowledge of alternatives to inpatient admission care approaches.


Teaching

* Essential: Commitment to and experience with undergraduate and postgraduate learning and teaching.
* Desirable: Experience as an educational supervisor for trainees.


Research and Audit

* Essential: Experience or involvement in a research project and publication; experience of carrying out an audit project.


Management

* Essential: Evidence of management/leadership skills training.
* Desirable: Previous management experience including junior medical staff.
