Overview
Our vision is for Newcastle to be a great place to grow up – for every child and young person to be safe and loved, healthy and happy, and ready for their next steps. As part of our commitment to improve pre-birth practice in Newcastle, we are excited to recruit for a skilled, passionate and committed progressed social worker to complement our established and innovative pre-birth team.
The team provides intensive support during pregnancy by completing holistic assessments of need and risk and providing specific, goal orientated support. Parents are supported to achieve and sustain change, enabling them to provide safe appropriate parenting. The primary aim of the Pre-Birth Team is to support parents from the earliest opportunity so that they can safely care for their child from birth. This is done via intensive intervention from social workers, family support workers and other professionals. Robust pre-birth assessments are completed alongside this work to allow evidence-based decisions to be made.
In May 2025, Newcastle Children’s Social Care was rated as GOOD across all areas by Ofsted. In relation to the experiences and progress of children who need help and protection, the grade was OUTSTANDING. The Pre-birth Team works effectively with parents where children have been removed from their care, or parents who are care experienced or who may have vulnerabilities and risks that may impact on their ability to care for their children. Families are allocated a social worker and family support worker from the initial referral, and this enables intensive, focused and targeted work to be undertaken quickly and effectively. Pre-birth assessments are detailed, thorough and demonstrate professional curiosity. They carefully consider relevant historical information and make clear and considered recommendations. This area of work is a real strength, resulting in sustained positive change and, for a growing number of children, a plan of permanence to remain living with their parents.
Who we are looking for
We are passionate about achieving the best outcomes for the children in our city, and you should be too. We are looking for a skilled and experienced Progressed Social Worker to lead by example in the pre-birth team and support the critical work we undertake with children and families.
We are proud, fair, and ambitious in our dedication to the children and families of our city – and we expect all our staff to share these values. We are lucky enough to have most of our teams based in one office, meaning that working relationships are strong and we pride ourselves on our ability to work together in the best interests of children and families. So, we are looking for team players who want to work in an environment that prioritises relationships and champions social work values.
Newcastle as a city has a great past and an exciting future. Working within Children’s Social Care for Newcastle City Council places you at the heart of a core city where we are focused on working for the best outcomes and opportunities for the next generation through our work with children and families.
