Foundation Model Research Scientist

Foundation Model Research Scientists will have proven hands‑on research or industry experience focusing on one or more of these key areas: Vision‑Action models, reinforcement learning, behavior cloning, foundation models, simulation and sim‑to‑real transfer. If you are passionate about developing technology for robots and using it to advance their capabilities and usefulness, this team will be a great fit for you! We’re looking for a highly skilled and innovative Foundation Model Research Scientist to join our team!


In this role you will:

* Develop deep learning methods to improve foundation models, taking them to the next level of real‑world applications like robotic manipulation
* Design machine learning techniques to adapt these models to key domains and downstream tasks
* Curate and construct datasets for large‑scale learning
* Collaborate closely with our research team to build robotics demonstrations that showcase the power of your work.


Who we're looking for

* We are open to candidates with a variety of educational and professional backgrounds. Successful candidates typically meet one of the following profiles:
* PhD in a foundation‑model‑relevant field (e.g., ML, robotics, computer vision), with strong research experience
* Master’s degree with several years of industry or applied research experience
* Bachelor’s degree with significant and relevant hands‑on industry experience
* 7 years in Research and Development


Additional qualifications

* Proficiency with vision‑action models, foundation models, reinforcement learning, and robotic simulation
* Technical fluency with deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch and programming expertise in Python
* Strong publication record in leading ML, robotics, or AI venues (e.g., CoRL, CVPR, ICLR, NeurIPS, RSS)


Bonus points if you bring experience in

* Sim‑to‑real transfer experience
* Experience with model parallelism and distributed training techniques
* Real robot policy deployment
* Experience with CUDA programming
* Understanding of 3D representations

The current reasonable and good faith estimate of the annual base salary range for this position is $128,100 – $237,900, which is based on a number of factors including, but not limited to, relevant skills and experience, educational background and certifications, performance and qualifications, market demand for the role, geographic location, and other organizational needs. An individual candidate may be considered for this position at a different job level, in which case the appropriate salary range will be provided to the candidate after their qualifications have been established.

Employees who are new to the RAI Institute typically receive an offer that is between the minimum and the midpoint of the posted salary range to allow for growth within the range over time. Base pay is part of a competitive total compensation package that may include an annual bonus, a long‑term cash incentive, monthly cell phone cost reimbursement, commuter cost subsidy, medical benefits, and more. Any final job offer will be determined based on our established compensation range for the role, the candidate’s experience and qualifications, internal parity, and market and business considerations.
