Health & Safety Officer
Location: Swanage Railway, Dorset
Contract: Part-time, 4 days/week (Wednesday–Saturday)
Salary: £26,400 per annum

Join the iconic Swanage Railway as our new Health & Safety Officer, helping to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for our staff, volunteers, and thousands of visitors.
Working closely with our Health & Safety Manager, you'll play a vital role in maintaining high safety standards across our stations, depots, events, and heritage operations. This is a hands-on role, ideal for someone confident in inspections, incident response, and training delivery.
Key Responsibilities
Support and monitor our Health & Safety Management System.
Conduct inspections, audits, and risk assessments across all operational areas.
Ensure compliance with H&S legislation, including fire safety, first aid, and legionella.
Provide safety oversight for weekend operations and large-scale events (galas, Christmas, Halloween, etc.).
Lead incident investigations and follow up with corrective actions.
Maintain accurate safety records and report findings to leadership.
Deliver engaging H&S inductions and refresher training to staff and volunteers.
Act as a trusted advisor to staff and volunteers, promoting a strong safety culture.
Deputise for the H&S Manager when required.
What We're Looking For
Essential:
Proven experience in a Health & Safety role, ideally across multiple sites.
Knowledge of UK H&S law and safety practices.
Training or awareness in fire safety, first aid, or legionella.
Strong communicator with the ability to engage with staff, volunteers, and external partners.
Confident in inspections, report writing, and lone working (especially on weekends).
Desirable:
NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent qualification.
Experience in railways, heritage, tourism, or events industries.
Understanding of volunteer-led organisations.
