Background and Context
This post provides an exciting opportunity to join the rapidly growing Wound Innovation Institute team at the University of Hull (UoH) as a Scientific Officer. You will be based at Castle Hill Hospital in our state-of-the-art research laboratories which have recently undergone a £1M refurbishment programme. The UoH has ambitious plans to significantly develop inter-disciplinary skin and wound research and innovation activity, supported by £16M Research England investment in technology and capabilities, growing our high-quality research and delivering long-term patient benefit. Your role (Scientific Officer – Histology & Genomics) is aligned to our recent investment in cutting-edge research equipment. You will oversee the day-to-day operations of our histology suite, providing training and specialist knowledge on histological sample processing and evaluation. This role will interface with our genomics team, delivering experimental workflows for spatial genomics (10X Xenium and VisiumHD) and spatial proteomics (Miltenyi MASCima) platforms. You will have the opportunity to support a wide portfolio of industry and academic projects.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities of the post
Based in purpose-built UoH Research Laboratories at Castle Hill Hospital with occasional travel to the University campus (10 mins drive) the postholder will oversee the operation and maintenance of the Wound Innovation Institute histology suite, assisting with research and enterprise projects, providing technical support to internal and external users as required. The postholder will prepare samples, run experiments, analyse data, and maintain detailed records. This includes preparing samples for our Xenium, VisiumHD and MASCima spatial omics systems.
* Assisting with research projects:
The postholder will be responsible for running experimental studies, collecting and analysing data, and supporting staff, students and external partners to interpret results. You will also be expected to collate data and draft experimental reports.
* Operating and maintaining equipment:
The postholder will be familiar with relevant laboratory instruments and/or demonstrate the ability to operate complex equipment, including troubleshooting and solving issues as they arise. This includes liaising with service engineers, equipment suppliers and colleagues to support efficient running of hardware and software.
* Ensuring safety:
The postholder will adhere to safety guidelines and protocols, including proper handling of chemicals and waste disposal, in line with university policies and procedures. The postholder may also be required to contribute to writing SOP's, COSHH and Risk Assessments, updating existing policies and procedures as directed by senior colleagues.
* Preparing samples and reagents:
The postholder will be expected to oversee histological sample preparation and analysis (including use of automated sample solutions and LIMS system), calibrate instruments, and ensure the availability of necessary materials and consumables. This will involve monitoring stock levels and ordering consumables are required.
* Training, mentoring and induction:
The postholder will support the histology facility induction process of new team members and external visitors, providing practical hands-on support and advice where needed. You will Introduce new colleagues to policies and procedures and support the costing of equipment access for external funding application.
* Collaboration and communication:
The postholder will be able to operate under their own initiative, as well as contributing to the broader Wound Innovation Institute team, communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.

* Provides day-to-day support to other members of staff and members of staff new to the work area.

Additionally the post holder will be required to:
