Technical Author - Rolling Stock – Derby
Contract - 4 Months
PAYE - £23.32 • UMB - £29.78
Hours & Working Pattern: 37 hours per week. Monday-Thursday: 8 hours per day, core hours 09:30–15:30. Friday: 7.5 hours, core hours 09:30–15:00. Hybrid working available with some flexibility in working hours.
Overview
We are seeking a Technical Author to support a major rail vehicle refresh programme for a global leader in sustainable transport solutions. The organisation designs, builds, and maintains modern rolling stock and rail infrastructure, with a focus on safety, innovation, and long-term reliability. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring the accuracy and completeness of programme documentation, including updating technical manuals to reflect current requirements, with a particular focus on integrating Fault Mode Indicator (FMI) updates into existing documentation.
Responsibilities
* Liaising with relevant train operating companies and vehicle owners, engineers, maintenance development engineers, train care staff and parts department to gather information/data required for technical documents.
* Authoring technical documents.
* Editing technical documents.
* Maintaining relevant IT systems.
* Issuing technical documents.
* Covering for colleagues during sickness and holidays.
Candidate requirements
* Essential: HNC or above or relevant experience.
* Ability to produce clear technical documentation.
* Ability to manipulate images using standard software.
* Ability to create and publish complex interlinked websites.
* Proficient in MS Word and MS Excel.
* Experience of using Photoshop or similar graphics program.
* Ability to communicate clearly and coordinate with different stakeholders at various levels within the organisation.
* Good communication skills, general technical knowledge, good IT skills.
* Experience of train maintenance or build desirable.
* Ability and willingness to learn quickly and apply the learning to produce tangible results.
* Self-motivated with the ability to work as part of a team or individually to produce results within defined timescales.
