Are you passionate and committed about making a difference to women, people and families accessing maternity care? This is an exciting opportunity for a skilled, self-motivated, experienced band 6 midwife to work as a member of the maternity team as a deputy public health midwife, on a secondment for up to 12 months.
We are looking for someone with drive and a passion for public health to work within the small, friendly team. As the deputy public health midwife, you will work as part of the maternity and wider public health team to improve maternal and infant health outcomes and deputise for the specialist midwife. The role focuses on the sharing of public health messages through different methods of communication, reducing health inequalities, promoting healthy lifestyles, and supporting families through targeted interventions. The post holder will deliver evidence-based care using national, regional and local guidance, provide specialist advice, support the immunisation programmes within maternity services and contribute to the development of health information, antenatal education and digital resources within maternity services. We need someone who is motivated, flexible, positive about public health, and who is keen to further develop their knowledge and skills.
Main duties of the job
To deliver midwifery care in public health across the maternity services, ensuring families receive evidence-based support and information. The post holder will champion LTHTR’s commitment to public health standards, support education and training of staff, contribute to audit and quality improvement, and promote safe, personalised care plan for families.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Duties to include, but not be limited to:
1. Provide assessment and support for public health needs in maternity services (e.g. smoking cessation, healthy weight, health and wellbeing).
2. Deliver proactive interventions across antenatal and postnatal pathways (community, ward, clinic, telephone).
3. Support the maternity vaccination programmes
4. Support the development and contribute to the delivery of antenatal education.
5. Promote informed choice and health literacy for diverse families.
6. Contribute to the development of guidelines and information sources for women and their families, ensuring accessibility for women regardless of language, background, disability or ethnicity. This will include patient information leaflets and digital resources.
7. Advocate for compassionate care, personalised care planning, and continuity principles.
8. Support the implementation of NICE and national guidance for public health in maternity care.
9. Contribute to audits (e.g., smoking rates, saving babies lives, vaccinations).
10. Maintain and support the development of clinical guidelines and information aligned to NICE, UNICEF, Regional and National Guidance and National Professional Standards.
11. Contribute to risk management and governance processes, incident review and learning; support CNST/Safety standards compliance.
12. Adhere to infection prevention, documentation, medicines management (where applicable), incident reporting and duty of candour.
13. Support the planning and delivery of training and updates for midwives, maternity support workers (MSWs) and students
14. Contribute to parent education (antenatal classes, workshops and digital resources).
15. Support competency assessment and reflective practice.
16. Work collaboratively with members of the multidisciplinary team and voluntary sector partners.
17. Promote inclusive practice for diverse families and reduce health inequalities, including fathers/partners, LGBTQ+ parents, young parents, and families with additional needs.
18. Support initiatives to reduce inequalities regarding public health outcomes.
19. Provide clear communication to MDT and women/families
20. Document assessments and plans accurately in Trust systems.

Qualifications & Education
Essential criteria
21. Registered Midwife (NMC).
22. Evidence of post-registration study/CPD relevant to public health
Desirable criteria
23. Teaching/assessment skills (e.g. practice assessor, mentorship, or equivalent experience).
24. Additional training in public health or health promotion (desirable)
25. Completed vaccination training or willingness to work towards
Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
26. Experience of providing women centred care
27. Understanding of public health priorities and health inequalities.
28. Demonstrated competence in supporting and delivering health promotion interventions.
29. Experience of working in a variety of maternity settings/environments
Desirable criteria
30. Experience in audit/service evaluation and implementing change.
31. Experience delivering staff training and parent education.
32. Experience in developing/using digital platforms
33. Experience in developing information resources for patients.
