Clinical Nurse Specialist – Acute Oncology

Job Summary

This full‑time fixed‑term contract is 13 months. The role works Monday–Friday during core hours, excluding bank holidays.


Responsibilities

* Deliver expert acute oncology care to patients with cancer‑related complications and emergencies.
* Work autonomously with the Acute Oncology Nursing team and across the organisation, giving advice, instigating investigations and implementing patient care.
* Manage an independent caseload, balancing the needs of the wider service.
* Develop and implement local and network‑wide management and treatment protocols and pathways.
* Coordinate cross‑department liaison and communication to improve patient experience and reduce length of stay.


Qualifications

Essential
* First degree in nursing or equivalent.
* Registered Nurse with NMC Level 1.
* Current competency in the use of the 24‑hour emergency helpline/UKONS triage tool.
* Independent and Supplementary Prescribing qualification or willingness to undertake.
* Teaching and assessing qualification.
* Advanced Communication Skills training.
* Psychology Level 2 training.
* Management qualification.
* Experience at band 6 or above in oncology/cancer/acute medical nursing.
* Experience of running nurse‑led clinics.
* Experience of applying research evidence to clinical practice.
* Evidence of being able to work across organisational boundaries.
* Evidence of leadership skills in clinical practice.
Desirable
* Management/leadership course.
* UKONS Acute Oncology Passport Level 3.
* Accredited Acute Oncology module or willingness to work towards.
* SACT or cancer specific qualification.
* Experience of using electronic chemotherapy/SACT prescribing systems.
* Experience with audit or service evaluation.
* Experience of developing and implementing policies and procedures.
* Evidence of improving safety and/or quality of patient care.
* Report writing and presentation skills.


Benefits & Contract

Band 7 – Band 7 salary £47,810 to £54,710 per annum pro rata. Fixed‑term contract 13 months, full‑time.
