Behavioral Health Senior Clinician- Entry, Assessment, & Referral
Recruitment began on September 9, 2025 and the job listing Expires on September 20, 2025. This position works within our Front Door Entry and Assessment team. It serves both adult and youth populations seeking services for mental health, substance use disorders and co-occurring disorders, who may also have developmental disabilities, and/or physical illnesses. It works as part of an outpatient assessment team, providing triage and assessments to inform diagnostic impressions, risk assessments, crisis interventions, and referral to services. It also works independently as part of a team that completes complex, comprehensive initial assessments to culturally and socio-economically diverse client populations, including a large Latino population, to determine eligibility for CSB services and offer treatment recommendations.
Duties also include outreach contacts to individuals attempting to link with CSB services and collateral contacts with community partners such as probation and parole, court system, and the Department of Family Services to support assessment completion.
Successful candidate will be computer literate and familiar with electronic health records. Along with having timely, electronic documentation that meets state local and federal performance contract expectations essential. A strong commitment to program development with an approach of “nothing is impossible” required.
Responsibilities
* Performing triage and clinical diagnostic interviews for referred or walk-in individuals using the DSM-5-TR/ICD-10 to support admissions to the program.
* Performing multi-dimensional assessments using the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) criteria to support admissions to the program.
* Participating in individual and small group clinical supervision meetings to discuss cases, while expanding knowledge, skills, and abilities to appropriately assess, diagnose, and make referrals for treatment.
* Completing and overseeing the completion of comprehensive clinical documentation to meet DBHDS and Medicaid standards.
* Collaborating with other divisions and external agencies in the provision of services to individuals and supporting individuals’ transition to different programs.

* The CSB provides clinical supervision for employees who are registered as licensed eligible mental health professionals in one of the following areas: Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Licensed Substance Abuse Treatment Practitioner or Clinical Nurse Specialist.
* If approved, licensure supervisors may receive a stipend of $1,500 (full-time) paid biweekly over 12 months.

* Performs complex evaluations and makes independent diagnoses using DSM.
* Recommends, monitors, and coordinates clinical care to clients.
* Collaborates with service professionals as participant/lead of Interdisciplinary Team (IDT).
* Consults with professionals on a variety of problems including delivery of needed services for clinically complex cases.
* Provides liaison to community agencies to facilitate communication and service provision for clients requiring multiple services.
* Provides risk assessments for dangerousness to self and others.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of intake procedures, social histories, interviewing techniques, and major schools of treatment; the ability to conduct mental health assessments and apply treatment approaches; the ability to formulate diagnoses for clients with acute, chronic, severe mental illness; the ability to interpret data from psychological tests, histories, and interviews; and the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with diverse organizations and the public. Strong communication skills are required.
Employment Standards
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from an accredited college with a master’s degree in social work, psychology, counseling, or nursing; plus two years of clinical experience.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
* Valid Driver’s License within one month of hire
* Possession of a current license to practice in the Commonwealth of Virginia in one of the following: Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Professional Counselor, Clinical Psychologist, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Licensed Substance Abuse Treatment Practitioner or Clinical Nurse Specialist.
UNDERFILL REQUIREMENTS: This vacancy may be underfilled at the level of Behavioral Health Clinician in Residence (S26, $75,474.26 – $125,790.50). The employment standards for the Behavioral Health Clinician in Residence are:
* Graduation from an accredited college with a master’s degree in social work, psychology, counseling, or nursing; plus two years of clinical experience.
* Ability to register as a licensed eligible mental health professional within 90 days and qualify for licensure within 3 years in one of the following: Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Licensed Substance Abuse Treatment Practitioner or Clinical Nurse Specialist.

Note: A registered licensed eligible mental health professional has been approved by the applicable Virginia health regulatory board as a supervisee in clinical social work or a resident in clinical psychology, professional counseling, substance abuse treatment practice, or marriage and family therapy.
Necessary Special Requirements
* The appointee will be required to complete a criminal background check, a Child Protective Services Registry check, and sanction screening; TB screening on hire and annually thereafter; National Provider Identifier is required.
* This position is emergency/essential services personnel and must report for duty during inclement weather and/or other emergencies.
* Licensed providers may not opt out of Medicare provider status.
Preferred Qualifications
* Experience with mental health, substance use, and developmental concerns in individuals, families, and communities.
* Experience conducting comprehensive assessments/intakes of adults with serious mental illness and/or substance use disorder.
* Knowledge of DSM-5-TR/ICD-10 and ASAM assessment and treatment recommendations; experience with diverse bilingual/multilingual populations.
Physical Requirements
Ability to access, input, and retrieve information from a computer; observe, document, and intervene clinically; may require transportation to other sites; duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
