Job overview

This is an exciting consultant post in general adult psychiatry that combines liaison psychiatry with Adult ADHD, within the Croydon Adult and Behavioural & Developmental Psychiatry Directorate at the South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. The role is full-time with 8 PAs for liaison psychiatry to the Croydon Mental Health Liaison Services (CMHLS) working age team and 2 PAs for 3 Borough Adult ADHD and ASD Service. The 10 PAs will include 7.5 DCC and 2.5 SPA sessions. It has arisen due to retirement in the liaison psychiatry service and expansion within the Adult ADHD service. Both services have a number of other consultants, thus the successful candidate will join a team of consultants, trainees and other professionals. The liaison psychiatry service is based at Croydon University Hospital whilst the 3 Borough ADHD service is based at Clapham Family Practice/Norbury Health Centre. Main duties of the job

Liaison Psychiatry Consultant

To provide clinical, operational and strategic leadership to the team. To work with managers and clinical staff to ensure that a high-quality service is provided to patients.

L The clinical leadership team will work with clinicians and managers at CHS, SLaM, Croydon Place, South West London Integrated Care Board (SWL ICB) and other partner agencies to ensure that a safe and high quality service is provided to patients, and to meet agreed performance standards.

Support staff wellbeing and development, working flexibly and creatively with the MDT to promote a culture which develops and improves mental healthcare for patients and informed risk-taking and anti-discriminatory practice

Support the team leadership in ensuring that the service meets PLAN and CQC standards, comply with the Trust’s policies and procedures, and take an active role in business planning

3 Borough Psychiatry Consultant

Leadership and consultant-led input into the 3 Borough service.

To take consultant responsibility for the patients. Assessing/supervising assessment and management plan of patients. Devising/helping to devise treatment plans and medication regimes. Expert risk assessment and management skills in complex care of people with complex neurodevelopmental and mental illnesses.

To ensure excellence in the delivery of evidence-based treatments. A source of support, advice, information to current/prospective patients, carers, referrers, MDT and other professionals.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical responsibilities for Liaison Psychiatry role

Assess/ review complex patients and agree joint management plans with medical and nursing staff

Attend general hospital and inter-agency multidisciplinary team meetings to contribute to clinical decisions and care plans e.g. for frequent attenders

Be available to advise/supervise team members with their assessments and caseloads

Ensure excellence in the provision of psychiatric assessments and evidence-based treatments to all referred patients to the service, including the Trust’s risk assessment protocols

Contribute to the training and support of medical and nursing staff in the delivery of psychiatric aspects of patient care

Fulfil Responsibilities as a Psychiatrist approved under Section 12 of the Mental Health Act 1983

Develop close working links with consultant colleagues and clinical teams in the general hospital in order to facilitate efficient and effective clinical communication and care pathways

Establish a reliable and accessible work schedule with the team

Ensure appropriate administration and documentation in relation to the duties of the post, including recording clinical activities in both Trust’s electronic patient record systems (ePJS for SLaM and Cerner for CUH)

Keep informed of developments in commissioning and NHS strategy, and attend London-wide and national liaison psychiatry meetings as appropriate

Participate in the Trust Clinical Governance Programme, including investigation and management of incidents and complaints, attending the Quality Governance Committee when appropriate

Contribute and lead on teaching, research, audit and service improvement, using a Quality Improvement and evidence-based approach to inform the development of the service

Participate in the Croydon General Adult Psychiatry on-call rota, which is approximately 1 in 12 (pro-rata). The consultant is third on-call after a CT trainee and ST trainee; on-call work is remunerated at 1% of salary.

Qualifications, registration and training

Essential criteria

14. Registerable medical qualification
15. Full GMC registration
16. CCT in General Adult Psychiatry with liaison endorsement and ADHD training or within 6 months of gaining CCT at time of interview
17. MRCPsych or equivalent
18. Section 12 approved MHA 1983 and Approved Clinician Approval

Desirable criteria

19. Relevant higher degree e.g. MD, MSc, PhD or other clinical qualifications

Experience

Essential criteria

20. Broad experience in all aspects of liaison psychiatry
21. Knowledge of UK hospital systems (or equivalent)
22. Knowledge and evidence of participation in CPD
23. Experience of working with a range of psychiatric patients
24. Experience in diagnosing and managing people with ADHD and ASD and coexisting mental health problems

Desirable criteria

25. Experience of working in Adult ADHD services
26. Experience of working in close partnership with other agencies e.g., ambulance service, social services etc.
