Role overview As a SEN Teaching Assistant, you’ll play a vital role in supporting pupils on a one-to-one basis and in small groups. You’ll help children access learning, build independence and engage positively with their education. Working closely with teachers and support staff, you’ll help deliver tailored strategies that meet each child’s individual needs and help them feel confident and secure in school. Key responsibilities Provide personalised support to pupils with SEN and SEMH needs Support children one-to-one and in small groups, adapting your approach to suit different learning styles Help pupils who communicate differently, or who need emotional or behavioural support, to feel seen, heard and valued Encourage engagement, focus and participation during classroom activities Support the implementation of personalised learning plans and behaviour strategies Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils, staff and parents where appropriate Requirements Experience working with children or young people, SEN experience is desirable but not essential A calm, patient and empathetic approach, with a genuine passion for supporting children with additional needs Strong communication and listening skills A background in personal care, youth work, education or similar support roles is highly desirable If you’re not already Thrive trained, we can support you with free Thrive training through Protocol Education, helping you grow your skills and become even more appealing to schools.
