In theatre, you will assist in operations and may perform supervised surgeries and procedures depending on your level of experience. Our department is a busy, high-performing cardiothoracic surgical unit and a major regional referral centre, including major trauma, serving a large and diverse geographical area. The unit has an excellent reputation for managing complex and high-risk cases with outstanding clinical outcomes.

The surgical team comprises 9 consultant adult cardiac surgeons, 4 congenital cardiac surgeons, and 6 thoracic surgeons, supported by a strong multidisciplinary team including 18 registrars, 13 senior house officers, advanced nurse practitioners, surgical care practitioners and nurse case managers. The department operates on a firm-based structure that fosters continuity, mentorship and close collaboration within the team.

Responsibilities

* Provide on-call cover for both cardiac and thoracic surgical patients, including emergency assessments and referrals.

* Manage postoperative patients, including those on the Cardiac ICU and HDU, in collaboration with anaesthetic and intensive care teams.

* Participate in audits, clinical governance and research activities.
* Engage in teaching and supervision of junior doctors, medical students and advanced care practitioners.
* Attend and participate in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings, morbidity and mortality meetings and departmental teaching.

Benefits

We support flexible working and will consider requests taking into account the needs of the service. UHS employees are able to access a range of NHS discounts, are entitled to a minimum of 35 days paid holiday (pro rata) and we offer a generous pension scheme. Southampton is an attractive place to live and work situated on the south coast, with an international airport and direct trains to London. The New Forest National Park and beaches of the Jurassic coast are also right on our doorstep. The city offers living costs 20% lower than London and 14 schools rated outstanding by Ofsted.
