NATIONAL VETERINARY SERVICES LIMITED JOB DESCRIPTION – Histology Job Title: Biomedical Scientist Reports to: Head of Department Department: Histology Business unit: NationWide Laboratories Prepared by: Sandra Wells Date: 06 February 2026 Main purpose of the role The post holder will work as a Biomedical Scientist within the Histology department, providing a high‑quality, professional diagnostic laboratory service in line with departmental and national standards. The role involves carrying out routine and specialist histopathology techniques under the supervision of senior staff, contributing to the timely and accurate processing of specimens to support patient diagnosis and care. While experience in human histology is preferred, candidates with relevant animal pathology laboratory experience will be considered, provided they can demonstrate transferable histological skills and a commitment to working towards best practice. Key Responsibilities Technical and Scientific Duties Perform routine histology procedures, including: Specimen reception, identification, and preparation Tissue fixation, processing, embedding, and microtomy Routine staining (e.g. H&E) and special stains, as trained Assist with dissection and specimen preparation appropriate to level of training and competency. Ensure accuracy and quality at all stages of sample handling, in line with SOPs. Use Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) for data entry, tracking specimens, and maintaining records. Participate in internal quality control procedures and contribute to maintaining UKAS / ISO 15189 & 17025 standards. Equipment and Laboratory Maintenance Operate, maintain, and perform routine checks on laboratory equipment. Report equipment faults and document corrective actions in line with departmental procedures. Prepare reagents and solutions following approved SOPs. Maintain a clean, safe, and well organised laboratory environment. Quality, Governance, and Safety Work in accordance with Health & Safety legislation, COSHH regulations, and Trust policies. Adhere to all relevant Standard Operating Procedures and quality management systems. Participate in audits, risk assessments, and service improvement activities when required. Maintain professional accountability for own work and recognise the limits of own competence. Training and Professional Development Work towards and maintain HCPC registration (where applicable). Participate in continuing professional development (CPD) and personal appraisal processes. Actively contribute to team learning and service development. Teamworking and Communication Work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary laboratory team. Communicate clearly and professionally with colleagues, pathologists, and other staff. Demonstrate flexibility and a positive attitude to service demands and change. Personal attributes: Qualifications, experience, skills, knowledge and competencies required to fulfil the role Essential Criteria Degree (or equivalent qualification) suitable for Biomedical Scientist practice. HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist, or actively working towards registration. Demonstrable experience in histology laboratory techniques. Experience in human histology or animal pathology histology with transferable skills. Good understanding of laboratory quality systems and diagnostic testing principles. Ability to work accurately under pressure and meet turnaround times. Good written and verbal communication skills. Basic IT skills and experience using laboratory computer systems. Desirable Criteria Previous NHS histology laboratory experience. Experience with dissection, special stains, or immunohistochemistry. Familiarity with UKAS accreditation standards. Experience supporting or training junior staff or students.
