Overall Job Purpose:
To provide agile MLA support for Research and Innovation (R&I) activities. When not assigned to specific R&I activities to assist with the daily running of the Manual Immunology laboratory section in the Halo (1 Mabledon Place). To assist in the performance of the routine diagnostic analytical work of the department as directed. To maintain the highest professional and technical standards in the department.
Main Duties:
To perform as directed by the laboratory any reasonable duty required. The duties below describe the general nature and level of work performed by staff assigned to this job. This is not an exhaustive list of all duties/responsibilities that may be required which may vary from time to time in the lights of changing circumstances and in consultation with the post holder. Main duties to include, but not be restricted to, the following: The receipt, identification and preparation of all samples and request forms entering the department.
1. To retrieve samples from storage and prepare for shipment.
2. With the upmost care aliquot samples for research and re-label.
3. To keep accurate records.
4. To be agile to meet project demands.
5. To liaise with research teams and couriers as appropriate.
6. To enter reports onto the laboratory information system.
7. To handle, use and dispose of blood (and other body fluids or tissues) and hazardous chemicals in a safe manner as according to COSHH.
8. To perform various routine laboratory and specimen processing tasks in a precise and accurate manner to assist the laboratory staff in providing an excellent laboratory service and to maintain high standards of quality within the department. To report to the senior BMS any instance or event which may cause a service delivery failure.
9. To use the Laboratory information system as according to local procedures (SOPs). To maintain the integrity and accuracy of laboratory databases.
10. Registering specimens in WinPath laboratory IT system and preparing samples for analysis and/or presentation to analysers. Filing samples for storage post-analysis.
11. To assist in the maintenance of equipment including start-up and shut-down procedures, running controls and calibration, as well as, ensuring equipment is functioning correctly prior to analysis. To carry out troubleshooting procedures when required and informing the senior BMS of situations requiring further action.
12. To assist the laboratory in dealing with telephone enquiries. Answering and dealing with telephone enquiries in a professional manner. Give authorised results to relevant health care professionals. To provide information within defined protocols, recognising own professional boundaries.
13. To follow the procedure for the incomplete lists for all relevant section(s).
14. To adhere to flexible working arrangements within the department. In addition you will be expected to participate to extended shift duties which include nights, evening, weekend and Bank Holidays duties across sites as required by Management.
15. To undertake general housekeeping including stock and waste management.
16. To prepare, store and use reagents and dispose of reagents as according to COSHH. To use departmental resources efficiently. To replace stocks of consumables and reagents and blood products when required and inform a Senior BMS if stocks are low or approaching minimum stock levels.
17. Undertake routine cleaning and maintenance of laboratory equipment and benches.
18. To undertake all duties pertinent to the smooth functioning of the SRA including but not restricted to; receipt, triage, request entry, sample tracking, transport, storage and processing of multi-disciplinary samples as required by the service needs.
