Job Summary

Based at St Bartholomew's Hospital which forms part of Barts Health NHS Trust

We are looking for a resident at ST4+ in associated specialties

to join our adult critical Care inter-hospital transfer team known as the Adult Critical Care Emergency Support Service (ACCESS). We are committed to ensuring the secure, reliable, compassionate, and proficient transfer of critically ill patients throughout the capital. Our operations are carried out in collaboration with the London Ambulance Service NHS Trust (LAS), the London integrated commissioning boards and associated critical care networks to provide a transfer service for critically ill patients throughout London 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The role starts in August 2026.

GMC Registration and NHS clinical experience is essential for this role.

The post-holder will ideally be a current Intensive Care Medicine Trainee taking an OOPT/E to build on their skills in the inter-hospital transfer of the critically unwell patient and education.

The Education Academy within Barts Health is expanding in response to the need with increasing numbers of students and trainees and commitment to offer the best educational experience for our trainees.

Main duties of the job

Clinical:

Join the dedicated, multi-disciplinary transfer team as the transfer doctor to complete clinical, capacity and repatriation moves for critically unwell patients.

Take clinical leadership of the team and undertake safe inter-hospital transfers with distant supervision (after an appropriate period of supervision and sign-off)

Ensure thorough and accurate record keeping during transfers

Perform effective clinical handovers

Proactively engage in education, governance and QI activities

Have an active role in service development and training

There will be dedicated training included in the role to build your competence and expertise in transfer medicine. Prior experience in intensive care medicine of at least 1 year, airway competencies and experience in intra-hospital transfers is essential.

Educational:

The successful post holder for this post will be involved with developing educational opportunities through a wide range of teaching modalities including simulation-based training (including in-situ sim), clinical skills and lectures. There will be a particular focus on programmes supporting the multi-disciplinary adult critical care transfer team.

Job Description

Job responsibilities

One post is available and will be based at St Bartholomews Hospital and is part of Barts NHS Trust.

The contract is 12 months, fixed-term and is 40:60 teaching and clinical. 40 % of the time will be dedicated to Education Delivery. 60% of the time will be undertaken with The Adult Critical Care Transfer Team. Pay scale would be in accordance with non-training grade terms and conditions.

This would typically suit anyone wishing to undertake further training in transfer medicine and education prior to or as part of an Out of Programme Experience (OOPE) from their Specialist Registrar training programme. For the latter prior agreement must be sought with the relevant Specialty Training Committee (STC) and Deanery

It is essential that applicants have a minimum of 12 months ICM experience as a registrar (ST4+) to work on the Critical Care Transfer Team.

NHS Clinical Experience Is Essential

The post will have opportunities to be involved in other teaching programmes including Foundation Trainees, and interdisciplinary simulation training.
