Responsibilities
* To decontaminate, inspect, and assemble reusable medical devices for use on patients in clinical areas across NHS Lothian (operating theatres, clinics, A&E, and other departments).
* To provide full reprocessing of these medical devices using the knowledge and skills gained through ongoing training and experience to ensure devices are processed to an agreed specification in accordance with department procedures, relevant quality standards and current European legislation (Medical Devices Directive 93/42/EEC, Annex 12 and ISO 13485:2003).
* To work as part of a multi-disciplinary team within the HSDU to provide a quality assured service to all users of the department.
* To contribute to high quality patient care and demonstrate personal values aligned with NHS Lothian Values.
Qualifications & Requirements
* Between 16 – 24 years of age (or to 29 if you have a disability or care experience).
* Hold a National 4 or above in English and Mathematics or core skills at level 4 achieved within another qualification.
* Demonstrated ability to learn, enthusiasm and dynamic, can‑do attitude.
Training & Development
Throughout the Modern Apprenticeship Programme you will be supported whilst learning how to maintain high standards of patient care. You will additionally learn and gain: management of yourself in a complex dynamic clinical environment; addressing equality & diversity needs of patients & staff; ensuring patient safety; establishing a report with multidisciplinary team and gaining confidence of patients and relatives.
On successful completion of your apprenticeship, you will have the opportunity to progress your career.
Recruitment Process
Information Session & Group Assessment – In Person, St John’s Hospital in Livingston, Monday 3rd November 11:00‑15:00.
Interviews – In Person, Monday 11th November / Tuesday 12th November.
Candidates successful in interview will be expected to start in NHS Lothian on Monday 5th January 2026.
