NHS Scotland is committed to encouraging equality and diversity among our workforce and eliminating unlawful discrimination. The aim is for our workforce to be truly representative and for each employee to feel respected and able to give their best. To this end, NHS Scotland welcomes applications from all sections of society.

This is a very exciting opportunity for an experienced, motivated, and forward-thinking Orthoptist with good clinical experience and knowledge, along with excellent communication skills, to join our friendly team of 7 Orthoptists, 10 Ophthalmologists, and 7 Optometrists based at the National Treatment Centre - Highland, Inverness.

We are a busy department covering the largest Health Board area in Scotland with a full complex caseload of all types of Orthoptic patients. We are also involved with the Glaucoma Monitoring Service.

The department covers several peripheral clinics and provides a comprehensive Pre-school Orthoptic Vision Screening Service throughout the remote and rural communities of the Highlands, Western Isles, and Orkney.

The post holder will have the opportunity to see the Highlands of Scotland, traveling by road, air, and sea, with occasional overnight stays to meet service needs. Flexibility and adaptability to various working environments and hours are required, and a full driving license is essential.

The National Treatment Centre - Highland is a state-of-the-art Eye Care Centre located on the University of Highlands & Islands Inverness Campus. Using a patient-centered approach, we are continuously developing the service to meet our population's needs. We seek compassionate, thoughtful team players eager to extend their professional scope of practice in a team environment where education and quality improvement are integral to service delivery. We are a BIOS accredited placement site for Orthoptic undergraduates.

The role requires a diploma/degree in Orthoptics with current HCPC registration. We welcome applications from both newly qualified practitioners and experienced orthoptists. New graduates will start on Band 5 and complete the NHS Flying Start programme. Mentorship will be provided, and over 24 months, the post holder should progress to Band 6 to meet the role requirements.

This is a permanent full-time position of 37 hours, aligned with service requirements.

From 1 April 2024, NHS Scotland will reduce the full-time working week from 37.5 to 37 hours without pay change. This will be applied pro-rata for part-time staff. The advert and employment offer reflect this change. Some service areas may require working up to an additional 30 minutes weekly temporarily, with pay, until roster adjustments are made.
