Job Vacancy

Our Midlothian Sport & Leisure Service strives to;

1. Meet the needs of Midlothian residents to enable them to be physically active, providing a positive & safe environment & varied programme of opportunities to be active.
2. Meet the needs of Sport & Leisure staff, providing them with a positive working environment, feeling valued, supported and with opportunities to develop.

We are looking for a dynamic and motivated team player to join our Active Schools Team to cover maternity leave.

KNOWLEDGE

Essential

3. Educated to degree level in a relevant discipline or GTC registered.
4. Minimum of two years experience of working with children in education, sport, health, leisure and or recreation industry.
5. Ability to identify good practice and promote the role of physical activity (including sport, play, health and active travel).
6. Experience in management of projects in areas of education, sport, health, leisure and or recreation industry.

Desirable

7. Experience of working with and influencing external partners.
8. Experience of partnership working with the appropriate agencies involved in the delivery of play, health, travel, physical activity and sporting opportunities.
9. Knowledge of how to manage resources to an agreed set of outcomes.
10. Awareness and knowledge of issues associated with working across departments.
11. Knowledge of budgeting procedures.
12. Knowledge of the Active Schools approach, its operation and required outcomes.
13. Experience of physical activity and sport planning.
14. Knowledge and experience of primary schools and the 5-14 curriculum.

SKILLS

Essential

15. Ability to prioritise tasks, meet deadlines and work on own initiative.
16. Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with internal colleagues.
17. Ability to assist with the process of integration, bringing together all elements of Active Schools work.
18. Ability to respond positively and enthusiastically to change within Active Schools and Midlothian Council.
19. Ability to recognise, create and seize opportunities to put ideas into practice in order to achieve objectives.
20. Ability to work effectively with a wide range of different people at every level and in different organisations.
21. Ability to present information in an interesting and stimulating manner.
22. Ability to positively overcome internal and external barriers at all levels in order to achieve results.
23. Ability to build trust and devolve responsibility and resources to partners/colleagues.
24. IT literacy.
25. Full and valid driving licence and have access to a car.

Desirable

26. Experience that clearly demonstrates the ability to lead and develop programmes and projects from conception to implementation.
27. Ability to integrate with other teams, giving a clear picture of actions required to produce results in your area of responsibility.
28. Ability to plan and carry out projects, either as a team leader or team member.
29. Ability to identify and develop the training needs of volunteers, leaders and coaches.

Position Title: Active Schools Coordinator

Contract Status: Fixed Term until February (with likelihood of continuation until July )

Hours of Work: 3 days per week - 21 hours & 36 mins

Working Pattern: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday

Weeks per year: 52

Please note that it is Midlothian Councils policy that successful applicants will be appointed to the first point on the salary scale.

Based on 21.6 hours over 52 weeks per year, the minimum actual salary for this position is £23,.24 per annum.

Requirements

This post is considered Regulated Work with Children under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act,. Therefore, it is an offence to apply if you are barred from working with children.
Successful candidates will require PVG Scheme membership for Regulated Work with Children, You will be required to join the Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme Update check prior to commencing employment with Midlothian Council, the cost of which will be met by you. For further information on the PVG Scheme please visit Please note that Disclosure Scotland has changed the way PVG certificates are issued. You will be notified by email from Disclosure Scotland that your certificate is available to view. Once you have viewed your certificate you will be allowed to share this with your employer and it is only available for 14 days from the first day you have viewed the certificate. If you do not grant access to Midlothian Council to view before access is removed, a further application will need to be generated, and this will incur an additional cost.
