Alcohol Specialist Nurse

The nurse specialist will assist in the assessment and treatment of patients with alcohol related problem, provide appropriate disease related advice and promote health education in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary team.
They may be expected to carry out specialist nursing and clinical procedures and refer patients appropriately and timely, for investigations and to other service providers. They will assist in delivering staff education programmes, ongoing advice and clinical supervision to other health care professionals. They will accept referrals from other Health Care Professionals; work unsupervised and may manage their own clinics, with regular monitoring/clinical supervision from the GI consultants.

Main duties of the job
* To comprehensively assess patients, gaining information about their physical health, mental health, social issues as well as their alcohol history to format a plan of care based on the patient\'s individual needs.
* To advise clinical staff on the management of patients experiencing acute alcohol withdrawal, including detoxification medication and vitamin prescribing.
* To advise and support emergency department staff on the admission criteria for patients with alcohol misuse issues attending the department.
* To liaise with other professionals both within the hospital and external agencies to meet the needs of the patient, including raising safeguarding concerns and referrals to local recovery services.
* Work closely with the Alcohol Care Team\'s Recovery Navigator identifying patients requiring their interventions.
* To provide training to Trust staff on screening and brief interventions, and to participate in the development and delivery of education programmes, offering ongoing advice and clinical supervision to other healthcare professionals.
* Undertakes research and clinical audits in own specialist area
* To provide nursing care at an advanced level
* To provide advice/brief interventions and information on the management of alcohol problems
* To provide telephone counselling and advice

Job responsibilities
* Provides advice and information on the management of alcohol to senior nurses and junior medical staff.
* Provides case presentation of complex patients to senior medical staff.
* Provides updates/information about relevant changes or developments within own specialty to managers/ directors and clinical directors.
* Provides complex and sensitive information to relatives and carers about their condition relevant investigations and the options for treatment.
* Frequent discussion with external agencies offering advice re referral and management of alcohol problems, also updates on the patients clinical condition, results of investigations and future management of their condition.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* 1st level Registered nurse
* 1st level degree in related areas
* PP126/127 or equivalent experience
* Evidence of qualification to undertake the supervision, teaching and assessing of students (essential requirement for post, expectation this will be completed within an 18 month period).
* Leadership certificate
* Management certificate
* NACAN
* Prescribing course/willingness to work towards
Experience and knowledge
* Previous experience at working in gastroenterology/alcohol areas
* Experience with Gastroenterology or working with patients with alcohol problems
Other requirements
* It is an essential requirement of the role that the post holder has a valid driving licence and is either a car owner and able to use the car for work purposes, or has a Trust personal lease vehicle which may be used for the role. However, the Trust would consider making reasonable adjustments to the role, if necessary, to enable a disabled person to undertake the role
