Job overview

The Specialist Practitioner (SP) Paramedic will provide 24/7 enhanced clinical support and supervision of staff across a range of clinical settings including; Emergency and Primary care, primary care and community care. Working as an autonomous practitioner the SP will provide advanced clinical management and co-ordination of complex and challenging care to patients in clinically demanding situations and environments. SPs will be selectively targeted and deployed as a primary response, co-responder or additional resource and may rotate through a variety of Emergency and Primary care settings.


Main duties of the job

As a Specialist Practitioner (SP) you will be a senior nurse or paramedic who rotates throughout the Urgent and Emergency Care system. In addition to being a solo responder to a range of emergency and non-emergency situations through the 999 and 111 system, you will rotate into a range of clinical environments which may include:

* Our Clinical Coordination Centre providing clinical advice to ambulance staff / Community First Responders and tasking your colleagues to suitable incidents
* Primary Care, helping to assess acute same day appointments and undertaking home visits on behalf of GP surgery
* Falls and Frailty services working with an Occupational Therapist to attend patients that have fallen and provide a full holistic package of care
* Minor Injury Units and Emergency Departments

When you attend a patient, you will use your advanced level of clinical assessment and decision making to diagnose and formulate a treatment plan that could range from treating and discharging the patient yourself to delivering lifesaving interventions. You will also be responsible for additional and supplying medicines such as courses of antibiotics through additional Patient Group Directions.

Corporate Induction
It’s really important for us to ensure you have the best onboarding experience which allows you to feel a sense of belonging from the start. To help with this, we will book your Corporate Induction as soon as we possibly can (depending on availability).
All new starters need to attend our *Corporate Induction in person, this is held over one and half days from our educational centres based in: Newbury (Berkshire), Bicester (Oxfordshire) or Whiteley (Hampshire). More specific details will be sent to you once your start date has been confirmed.

*Please note – depending on your role additional training may be required following on from your corporate induction.


Detailed job description and main responsibilities

* Provision of an operational response/clinical treatment to patients who may have presented through the 999 / 111 system; via a referral from a Health Care Professional; or through a walk-in clinic setting.
* To provide emergency clinical scene management, if first on scene in the case of multiple casualties, major incidents etc, in accordance with Trust policy and procedure, until relieved by an appropriate Incident Commander.
* To maintain timely communications with the Emergency Operations
Centre/Clinical Hub, using any means available and appropriate during operational shifts, ensuring that the Emergency Operations Centre/Clinical Hub is aware of operational availability at all times.
* Demonstrate highly proficient, coordinated, and confident expertise in the delivery of evidence-based care.
* Respond to patients with undifferentiated and undiagnosed conditions and undertake assessment, investigation, treatment and care planning for a wide spectrum of patients utilising relevant evidenced based practice, local guidelines and enhanced scope of practice
* Assimilate the assessment and examination findings of other clinicians in order to critically appraise the proposed care pathway and/ or interventions and where necessary provide an advanced lead in determining the overall plan/ pathway.

Qualifications


Essential criteria

* A minimum of BSc in Paramedic Science or equivalent clinical academic qualifications
* Hold a relevant and recognised postgraduate advanced practice qualification (Level 7) in Minor Illness and Injury
* Professional body registration (HCPC) / NMC.
* Level 3 IHCD/FutureQuals Ambulance Emergency Driving qualification.
* Must hold ILS or ALS qualification.


Desirable criteria

* Master’s degree or postgraduate qualification in a relevant field.
* A recognised teaching qualification or equivalent demonstrable ability with evidence of teaching in practice and/ or classroom situations.
* Mentoring and coaching; minimum of level 6 (certificate) or significant demonstrable development of mentoring and coaching skills through formal learning and application.
* Qualification incorporating extended clinical practice skills (e.g. Paramedic/ Emergency Care Practitioner, Critical Care Paramedic.)


Knowledge and Experience


Essential criteria

* Significant experience of working in an Emergency or Urgent Care environment.
* Demonstrated and maintains an up to date working knowledge of all clinical and technical procedures appropriate to this role.
* Good knowledge of the professional clinical guidelines and code of conduct appropriate to this role and of the policies, procedures and protocols relevant to this post.
* Good working knowledge of the current legislation relevant to this post.


Desirable criteria

* Experience of using a variety of IT software, including Microsoft Windows.
* Knowledge of National Health Service Framework issues

Essential criteria

* Able to perform frontline operational duties as a Specialist Paramedic for the Ambulance Service and when working for stakeholders. Providing care and advice of a specialist nature to patients and carers.
* Demonstrates clear clinical leadership- supporting other staff in both operational and learning environments.
* Demonstrates the ability and commitment to provide high quality patient care, appropriate to patient needs.
