Casual Road Safety Tutor
Job description
Casual Hours
Play a key role in delivering road safety education and Bikeability training for school pupils and adults.
Bikeability is a practical, and professional cycle training programme, which has shown that cyclists are more skilled once they've taken part. It provides children and young people with vital life skills – not only do they learn how to ride a bike safely on our roads, but they gain confidence, social skills, and a better sense of awareness. As a result, more children tend to ride bikes to school, improving their mental health and well-being as well educating them about sustainable travel.
Join our dedicated team of Road Safety Tutors and this is where you could make a difference. You'll be given free training to become a fully accredited national standards Bikeability Instructor, and will receive on-going professional development training.
With the benefit of being a casual worker, you'll have the opportunity to work as many shifts as you would like but will be dependent on the needs of the service. It will largely be based around school hours, but there may be some weekend work. You'll be based at various locations around Leicester.
What you'll be doing
You'll travel to your designated school and meet with other Instructors and school staff member. You'll help check the bikes and ensure that they are safe and ready to use. Introducing yourself to the young people, you'll help get them prepared for cycling. You'll deliver 'Bikeability' Training initially in the playground and then move to the streets around the school. You'll upload notes and data to a digital platform and ensure all records are accurately maintained. On occasions, you'll be required to teach adults.
What you'll need
You'll need to be able to ride a bicycle confidently and have an awareness of road safety. With experience of delivering training, you'll be able to train school children, in a confident and calm manner. You should be approachable, patient, and able to train to the best of your ability, you'll keep control of the group and ensure their safety is at the forefront. It is desirable that you have the 'Bikeability' training qualifications, however training will be provided, if you meet the other requirements.
Appointment will be subject to an Enhanced DBS check.
What we can offer you
As well as the satisfaction of helping to improve thousands of lives across Leicester, you can look forward to a work environment that encourages a healthy work/life balance. You'll have access to membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme and the option of flexible working. We'll also give you the chance to develop your skills and expertise with a variety of training and development opportunities. In addition, you can choose from a number of flexible benefits, including childcare vouchers, discounts on city buses and trains and help with relocation to Leicester, where appropriate. For an illustrative value of your benefits package, take a look at our benefits calculator.
