Job Title: Career and Learning Assistant

Department: Advice and Guidance

Salary: £26,537-£28,761

Job Type: 1 full-time, permanent (35 hours per week)

Career Education Assistants work within the Careers Advice and Guidance department to support the delivery of the college’s career programme. Main duties include providing impartial careers advice and guidance to prospective college applicants, offering advice on study options, responding to queries from the online application system and operating a drop‑in IAG service to applicants. The post also supports the delivery of a career programme to learners through activities such as support with applications to higher education, offering course advice, group work, attendance at college and external events and supporting staff to deliver a service that meets the needs of all students and clients. The team is based across all college centres and the holder may be required to work across various sites on occasion.


Key Responsibilities

* To provide impartial information, advice, and guidance to college applicants on training, course and apprenticeship options
* To respond to email and phone enquiries offering IAG to applicants
* To support the Careers Advice and Guidance Team with the delivery of on‑course advice and guidance activities to current students
* To provide general on‑course IAG to current students
* To manage referrals from Admissions, Course Enquiries Team and curriculum staff using the Digital Enrolment System and other college databases
* To signpost students to digital resources, independent guidance tools and careers information
* To plan and deliver high quality group sessions to students on a range of topics
* To support college recruitment by regularly liaising with relevant teams such as Admissions, Course Enquiry Team, Apprenticeship Team and Learning Support
* To make detailed records of interactions with students and enquirers using the college information systems
* To refer students and college applicants to appropriate individuals and agencies, both inside and outside the college
* To use and maintain appropriate records of information and advice activities in line with confidentiality and GDPR policies and procedures
* To acquire and maintain up‑to‑date knowledge on course information, progression routes, and relevant financial information
* To participate fully in staff development and in‑service training as required
* To carry out such other relevant and appropriate duties within the framework of a post of this grade that may from time to time be required and at a location determined by the needs of the service
* To represent the college and Careers Advice and Guidance Team during open days, careers events and external partner activities


Additional Information

* Work flexibly across college centres and at external events across Merseyside. This may on occasion include some evening work
* Work for significant periods later August / September during enrolment and occasionally during the evening
* To carry out the duties of the post in line with college policies and procedure


Essential Criteria

* A recognised careers advice and guidance qualification at Level 4
* Good knowledge of and experience using a range of IT systems
* Ability to work under pressure and operate flexibly
* Awareness and commitment to following procedures relating to safeguarding; confidentiality; data protection and equality, diversity and inclusivity within an educational environment
* Experience of providing 1 to 1 advice and guidance to young people and adults on careers and employability topics
* Experience planning and delivering high quality career group work on a range of careers and employability topics
* Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of service users
* Ability to produce clear, consistent and accurate records using college information systems
* Commitment to own self development and the ability to reflect on own performance
* Ability to build and form good relationships with students, staff and stakeholders within college and externally
* Awareness of barriers that can prevent students from accessing education
* Ability to manage own time effectively and prioritise workload
* Able to meet deadlines and meet key target


Desirable Criteria

* Educated to degree level or equivalent
* Recent experience delivering information, advice and guidance in an educational setting
* Broad knowledge of the range of post 16 education, training, apprenticeship, and employment opportunities available
* Experience using a range of digital careers resources and platforms
* Experience of supporting students with applications to higher education
* Ability to produce high quality careers and LMI resources
