Overview

As a Project Engineer at the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC), you will have the opportunity to apply your skills to solve real‑world manufacturing problems. Working within a team of multiple disciplines at the Integrated Manufacturing Group (IMG) to develop novel solutions for the high‑value manufacturing sector, you will conduct research into specific technical fields, including computer vision and machine vision. As a project engineer, you will ensure successful project delivery, delivering continuous improvements to IMG processes and build AMRC’s reputation in computer vision and AI.

You will be expected to deliver tasks with support from senior colleagues, work to set timescales, operate within a diverse team and contribute to the successful completion of projects. Your work will encompass all aspects of working with manufacturers, large and small, to identify and deliver projects aimed at improving efficiency, productivity, quality and sustainability. In this role you will be expected to continuously develop your skills and keep abreast of emerging technologies in a specific field. You will use these skills to help IMG deliver tangible impact to the UK high‑value manufacturing sector.


Main Duties And Responsibilities

* Delivery of project tasks related to computer vision, with assistance from senior colleagues.
* Conduct experimental work and synthesize outputs for use in project reporting.
* Work to deadlines, and develop an ability to manage your own time and resources.
* Communicate own work to peers, both as written and verbal outputs.
* Partake in stakeholder engagement sessions, both industrial and academic.
* Work with peers to develop solutions to complex manufacturing and other highly technical problems.
* Collaborate with colleagues from multiple teams to plan workload and resources to fit project timescales.
* Research into novel technology to advance knowledge, evaluate new techniques, and to solve specific manufacturing problems.
* Adhere to the AMRC’s quality management system and health and safety system.
* Write technical engineering reports.
* Provide assistance to peers when required.
* Attend conferences, trade shows and other events to develop your own capabilities.
* Assist with project delivery outside of your core area of expertise when required.
* As a member of staff you will be encouraged to make ethical decisions in your role, embedding the University sustainability strategy into your working activities wherever possible.
* Carry out other duties, commensurate with the grade and remit of the post.

Have a good honours degree in a relevant subject (or equivalent industrial experience).

Ability to work independently under the guidance of senior colleagues, within a team and manage own time effectively.

Ability to communicate, both written and verbally (e.g. report writing, presenting work).

Experience of developing solutions to complex and highly technical problems in the field of vision systems.


Desirable

Ability to identify solutions to engineering challenges through research, as directed by senior colleagues.

Knowledge of vision system design, incorporating cameras, optics and lighting selection. Understanding of computer vision inspection technologies and image processing techniques.

Knowledge of artificial intelligence and how it can be applied in a manufacturing environment.

Ability to try new and novel approaches to problem solving.

Ability to make decisions on the day-to-day use of complex technology will be within the remit of this role.
