About ZELP ZELP is an agricultural technology company committed to creating a sustainable future for agriculture - one that meets the needs of present and future generations, promoting human and environmental health, animal welfare, and social and economic equity. Our first focus is to develop and scale technology that measures and mitigates methane emissions in the livestock industry. Today, 1.3 billion people rely on the industry for their livelihoods and food security. However, it is the single biggest human-driven source of methane emissions globally, emitting more than both the oil & gas industry and the coal industry. The deployment of our technologies on a global scale has the potential to drive half the global methane reduction needed by 2030, and to greatly transform the beef and dairy industries. ZELP was an inaugural winner of the Terra Carta Design Lab, and has received funding and support from the European Commission, Innovate UK, The Global Methane Hub and the Gates Foundation. Job Details As a key engineer in our Design Engineering team within Zelp you will be pivotal in developing the ZELP Sense device; our first commercial product and a major milestone, and play a direct role in reducing livestock emissions to combat climate change. The role will report to, and collaborate with a Lead Design engineer within the Sense team, contributing to exciting project work. The responsibilities include: Use a fundamentals based approach to solving mechanical design challenges to optimise device design, improving lifetime performance and reliability. Using knowledge of fundamental principles (e.g. fluid dynamics, filtration) to consider how mechanical design choices are likely to affect sensing accuracy and data quality. Generating informed hypotheses and planning, designing and executing well considered investigative testing on design concepts in a timely manner. Data analysis of time series data to generate insights and conclusions to hypotheses. Seamless collaboration with other business units including ML and electronics teams to ensure that insights are shared across the interdisciplinary team, ensuring the best decisions are made with regards to ML pipeline decisions and firmware logic. Conducting and improving test methods to ensure repeatable and accurate calibration processes and assembly verification test methods. Transferring designs from R&D level prototypes to manufacturable products through design for manufacture (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) at both a batch and mass production level, with great communication to external contract manufacturers and suppliers. Hands-on prototyping and building of test devices for deployments in real world conditions. Monitoring and interpreting data to gather real world device performance insights. Fast logical troubleshooting of electro-mechanical issues as required, to ensure trials run as smoothly as possible. Assisting with deployments (both on-site and remotely) by monitoring data to ensure data quality is maximised, and logically troubleshooting electromechanical device issues as required, to ensure trials run as smoothly as possible. Producing and maintaining thorough and accurate design project documentation including investigative test reports, test procedures, contribution to DFMEA. Required experience: 3 years of relevant work experience. This position is best suited for candidates with mid-level experience, ranging up to 8 years. A robust understanding of physics fundamentals such as fluid dynamics and the relationship between mechanical design and sensor accuracy. 3D CAD Modelling (Onshape or Solidworks preferred). Experience of data analysis, ideally in analysing multivariable time series data using python Experience working with prototype electronics e.g. Arduino Design documentation including DFMEA experience Designing and conducting validation testing to meet product requirements GD&T and tolerance stack analyses, and 2D drawing capability Sound knowledge of manufacturing and assembly processes i.e. injection moulding of rigid and flexible plastics, sheet metalwork, die cutting, snaps, plastic welding, fasteners, etc. Practical hands-on prototyping and 3D printing Complex electromechanical CAD assemblies Working in cross-functional teams Candidate will likely have exposure to: Experience developing robust products Maintaining bill of materials (BOM) and product costing Manufacturing and assembly at low volume and/or high volume and production lines Nice to have experience: Cradle to grave or cradle to cradle projects Supplier selection and Contract Manufacturer liaison Product data management / engineering change control process Gas sensing experience Farm / Agriculture experience A high-level understanding of the complete product development lifecycle
